Hello! I'm on your feed probably because you have that one Buttercup AMV (with the wrestlers and the fancy colors, you know the one) somewhere down along your watch history. Somehow, I thought about that video again this morning for the first time in a while, and, out of curiosity, looked into what people had to say about it on the internet. If you're not too big a fan of reading good, old, boring walls of text, you might wanna just scroll all the way down to this post's TL;DR.

I found that there have been two recurrent misconceptions about the video (and about the channel at large, maybe) that I feel the need to clear up:

1) No, I haven't earned or attempted to earn money from either the Buttercup video or from the other videos on this channel. Or rather, I've earned a grand total of $0 since this channel was created in early 2018, because it was my implicit choice not to monetize any of my AMV/montage-type videos (i.e., all of the videos on the channel thus far). Something something, ethics and ownership. I don't exactly "own" the content in my videos; I just mash different creations into one to produce a new thing. So, even though I could've feasibly retired with the full projected income from that one video (๐Ÿฅฒ), I continue to choose not to monetize anything on the channel out of personal principle and the respect I have for the third-party creations I utilize in my projects and for the people originally behind them (in the case of Buttercup, Jack Stauber and Masaaki Yuasa and their respective colleagues). Thus, I've never touched AdSense or any of the other YouTube monetization tools available for this channel. I've also opted not to be a YouTube Partner, despite YouTube telling me that I'm eligible for it.

In addition, while I don't really have a good picture of how YouTube works these days, I've never explicitly consented for ads to show up on my videos. If ads do show up though, that might be an action taken on behalf of the copyright holders or because the current ad policy of YouTube itself necessitates the showing of ads. To speak of the situation as of this writing though, ELLO Music, Jack Stauber's distributor(?), has a Content ID claim on the music but seems not to take any action for monetization or the display of ads. (On a separate note, can someone knowledgeable about Jack Stauber fact-check if he is in any way affiliated with ELLO Music? I intend to dispute all fraudulent claims.) So if you ever see ads on the Buttercup video, point your finger towards YouTube since neither I nor the Content ID claim holders have so far intended for any to be around. The bottomline is that I earn nothing from ads and will continue not to.

If I do decide to make more videos on this channel in the future and if "earning" is something I end up gradually considering, it wouldn't be through any of the YouTube processes of monetization. I'd instead probably go for a tipping-based service like Ko-fi or something like that. This is so that if a dollar arrives on my doorstep, it had been willingly sent there addressed to me, the person behind this channel, with your own consent and charity.

2) I feel like it's false to say that I haven't credited any of the original sources for the works that I use in my videos. I've made sure to have it standard practice from day one of this channel to provide due credit in the written descriptions of videos. I suppose most people don't really bother to check in there, though can I really blame them? People come on YouTube primarily to watch videos, of course, not to read a body of text.

I do completely understand though how people unacquainted with the concept of an AMV would either assume that I'm the "original creator" or be rubbed the wrong way that I'm "stealing" from others. I'm not either of those things; of course I didn't develop most of what you see and hear in my videos, but it'd be rather misleading to say that I've stolen the works that I utilize. I think this is a debate on the broader trend/subculture of AMV-making that's existed for many decades before I myself began to dabble in it. I guess what it comes down to is that if you're fine with those movie scene + music montages you see on Tiktok (I don't have a Tiktok account but I'm trying to make a semi-hopeless analogy with it anyway), then you should probably be fine with this channel's content so far.

TL;DR: I haven't been making money off of this channel and I'll never claim videos that are not fully original as entirely of my own creation.

That's all. A strange Q&A(?) since I gave myself both the questions and the answers, and since this channel may have already long outlived its brief relevancy. But I felt like writing this morning, so I did!

Anyway, for those who don't know this channel but have stumbled upon this post: hey, this is lisuga!

See ya!
