Not sure how much people here follow the aftermarket / homebrew scene, but there's tons of games out there these days that are being made to play on old original hardware. While I won't begin to get into all of them, one group that you should keep an eye on is "Habit Soft" ("Habit!" and "Game Impact"); besides partnering on MANY little games with various gaming industry veterans, they are a small Japanese outlet that WANTS to deal with International sellers but is struggling to manage the various customs associated with business outside Japan (they have recently released some of their games in English, a few shown below). I should say that their games aren't exactly cheap... especially if you're going through a proxy, and they tend to release updates to their games fairly often (and sometimes without warning), but they have a fairly large body of works. MSX, Game Boy, Game Gear, Famicom (and "FCZERO" Software) and Mega Drive are their current platforms, but they could branch out to other platforms in the future. As someone who dabbles in a lot of this stuff, I figured I'd put others on to them.

Yes, we did mention them before (just last month actually), but we've acquired a few more of their titles with some cool flyers as well. I guess I should point out that many of their games have been leaked online if you look hard enough for them, but if you want to support them, please visit their site below.

www.gameimpact.info/

The games listed are:

Repair-chan no Shuuri Daisakusen [リペアちゃんの修理大作戦] - A Mega Drive game slightly similar to Atari's 1979 "Lunar Lander" and toropippi's Doujin work, "Fluid Lander". There are various gimmicks and mild physics (wind) at work. It has multiple endings.

Dracula no Shiro [ドラキュラの城, Dracula's Castle] - An improved Mega Drive version of the Game Gear and Game Boy title of the same name. It's a top-down Arcade-style action/puzzle game where the player goes through many rooms to find princess Saiko and rescue her from Dracula and his minions. The game has a good and bad ending.

Another day, another batch of Doujin titles. A few of them are games we've already had digitally but now acquired physical copies, while others are pretty rare and I haven't come across them until now. I've been seeing what works and what doesn't or "kinda" works the last few days (ARC - Aim, Recover, Contact - had to be dumped with a disc recovery tool and crashes after selecting a character, but more testing is in order). A few of these games have been recorded recently and will probably go live within the next few hours... maybe. Hopefully.

EDIT (09/17/24): Finally made several videos (8) I was too lazy to edit public. Besides that, check out what's below.

Game Highlights 49:

Rule of Rose - Released back in 2006, there's a lot of things that can be said about this weird and polarizing PS2 horror gem. As the second of only two games developed by "Punchline", a studio founded by former "LOVE•de•LIC" members responsible for several cult classic gems ("Moon: Remix RPG Adventure", "L.O.L.: Lack of Love" and "UFO: A Day in the Life"), "Rule of Rose" is one of the most expensive and controversial games released for Sony's PS2 console... it also serves as Punchline's swansong as they immediately went out of business following the release of the game (and even then, there was a 3+ year gap between this and their previous title, "Chulip"). Yoshiro Kimura was the president of Punchline and resurfaced many years later with some of his team to form "Onion Games", releasing works such as "Million Onion Hotel", "BLACK BIRD", "Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada" "Mon Amour" and the upcoming "Stray Children"... and the gaming world is a slightly better place because of their contributions. That all said though, holy cow... there is a lot of history to unpack here.

Rule of Rose is set in the 1930s in rural Cardington, Bedfordshire, England, a few years before World War II. The game tells the story of a 19-year-old young woman named Jennifer, whose parents were killed in a tragic airship accident. She is later, ironically, kidnapped by a group of demented children collectively called the "Red Crayon Aristocrats" from the "Rose Garden Orphanage" and taken aboard an enormous zeppelin where the game takes place. During her time on the airship, her worst fears manifest in a variety of ways as she deals with the Aristocracy and creatures known as "Imps" with only a handful of tools at her disposal as well as a canine companion named Brown. The game draws some comparisons to "Silent Hill" and "Haunting Ground" but doesn't play as well as either. In all actuality, the gameplay is almost unanimously considered some of the worst in the genre and that it is apologetically clunky and borderline unplayable. While these claims are "slightly" exaggerated, the game was released in a very dubious state (and through digging, was compiled in Debug Mode by default, an extremely rare occurrence and snafu for an officially released game... there have been others over the years such as the "demo" releases of Keio and Undead Knights to name a few which allowed the whole game to be accessible, but this is still an odd outlier). The game has terrible collision and combat is almost exclusively melee... when combined with swift enemies and little in the ways of defense, the game can literally be impossible to complete if the player takes too many hits and uses too many healing items in some spots. The inclusion of Brown is also often criticized as he further reduces the pace of the game and is often compared to Haunting Ground's "Hewie" who is the goodest of boys and also behaves more in line with how a dog should... and the inventory is not only limited, but you can inadvertently ditch important items needed to progress.

Conversely, while the gameplay is subpar, almost every other aspect of the game is praised. The plot touches on a lot of psychological topics and doesn't strictly rely on jump scares often found in other horror titles to instill fear and dread. It was so unnerving and taboo in gaming circles that Sony didn't want to localize it outside of Japan (leading Atlus to save the day), the game was literally banned in the United Kingdom, and moral panic caused the game to be delayed and released in obscenely low quantities in other parts of the world, and the game is hard to find as a whole. Kimura took a trip to Germany and England to find inspiration for the game and involved a group of European and American kids in the game's development to add authenticity to the behavior of the characters (they also inspired the game's orphanage), which ultimately led to one of the best stories told in a video game. "Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales", "A Little Princess" and "Lord of the Flies" all have parallels found in the game as well. The animation for most things is also motion captured (and in the case of the kids, were motion captured by Japanese children) and while the game was panned by almost every major review outlet of the day, it left a very strong impression with gamers as a whole with an impressive Metacritic score relative to mass media scores (still sitting at an 8.8 out of 10). If the gameplay had been improved, it's almost scary to think of how popular the game would've been on the aftermarket. Even as is, the game goes for a hefty price that only diehard collectors will want to put down.

There's all sorts of other oddities with this game... a lot of unused content, international magazines pandering to overblown hysteria, animal cruelty, young girls going through puberty and learning about love through a childlike lens, strong connections to future works like BLACK BIRD, interests in a sequel and / or HD remake and more... too much to list here, but I will say this: "Rule of Rose" has earned its place in gaming history as a bona fide cult classic, for better or worse, and earned a spot on GS' Game Highlights. I don't recommend buying it as-is, but if it was made readily available in a more affordable form with some quality of life improvements, then the game would be a no-brainer purchase. Go play it or watch it however you find fit.

Finally carved out some time with the hectic work assignment I have to get three videos together. Also bought quite a few gems and obscurities in my travels. Should hopefully get some stuff out in the next few days.

Videos are going to be a little slow-going for the time being as I'm currently working 6 days a week on a project going in and out of town. That said, I want to thank the 1,000+ new subscribers over the last few days for making "Pachinko Sexy Reaction" go slightly viral with almost 200k views and plenty of new (and funny) comments and our existing audience for browsing some of my older content during this dry spell. Not sure where or why it's happened recently, but continue being men and women of culture, and continue to game on!

Geez, it's already been more than 3 weeks? We're still alive over here, just been a busy time at work. Only have one video (almost two?) done admittedly, but going to work to get a few more done. Got a lot of new Switch and Doujin games (besides the Doujin shown below) and don't want to fall into a habit of putting too many of them out at once.
