Accounts have launched!

Now your stats can be saved more securely, and accessible across devices. We also visualise your stats better! Create an account and let us know how you go!

Tip: to get your stats to sync with your account, simply log in or create your account on that same browser. If you create your account on a different browser, that's fine - just log in on the browser you normally use and your stats will sync.

Huge thanks to Madi who has developed the whole website from day 1. Getting accounts up and running has been a really big effort and she's made a lot of smart and thoughtful decisions.

Also a massive thank you to all our testers who helped us find and squash a bunch of small bugs before launching this. We so appreciate it!

A few small things to note:
1. You can't single-sign-on with Google from the Instagram browser. Google just doesn't allow this.
2. We think the app is coming soon (I know you'll ask!).
We're submitting it soon, and we'll see if Apple approves it. Android is next (not because we don't care about Android, it's just that fewer of our solvers use Android).
3. We're aiming to get subscriptions with archive access, mini cryptic crosswords, and clue submissions out in December. You can register for early access on the website and we'll keep you posted!

Minute Cryptic

I love those clues that bring an instant smile to my face with their playfulness, and sometimes they do involve adult themes (while maintaining an appropriate decorum). So, I want to find a way to allow for those clues, while respecting the delightful fact that we have school classes playing Minute Cryptic! Keen to hear if you think this is a good middle ground.

Progress on the Minute Cryptic app! If Apple accepts it, we might be a couple of weeks away from release, before quickly releasing the Android version. If they don't... who knows 🤷
Shout out to John for all his work on this!

Minute Cryptic

We’re getting some great questions about words in the clue that don’t form part of the definition or the wordplay. These are linking words/phrases, they link the wordplay to the definition, and their purpose is to help the clue read nicely.

A recent example would be "Tattoo artist secretly keeps signing initials in jobs" (5). The wordplay is "Tattoo artist secretly keeps signing initials", the definition is "jobs", and the linking word is "in".

I think it’s fair to say that the “perfect” clue wouldn’t have linking words. But, at Minute Cryptic, we really care about the surface reading of the clue - we want it to read well and hopefully in a clever or funny way that prompts a smile when you first see it! So, we will sometimes use linking words when we think it really improves the surface reading of the clue. A bonus (perhaps) is that sometimes common linking words WILL be part of the wordplay, and that’s an extra level of trickery, for those of us that like to be tricked 😅

I’m not sure that we’ll use all of these linking words, but these are ones that you’ll find in the wild, and there are other less common linking words used.

Minute Cryptic

Coming up soon, we’ll have a clue that requires a knowledge of the phonetic alphabet. It might seem niche, but this is a fairly standard reference in cryptic crosswords, so rather than shy away from it, I thought I’d more proactively introduce it! Be on the lookout 👀
