On October 17, 2023, an Israeli air strike targeted al Ahli Hospital, which was sheltering thousands of displaced and wounded Palestinians 11 days into the Israeli onslaught on Gaza.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the explosion killed 471 Palestinians and injured 342 others. However, Israel denied responsibility for the attack and instead blamed the Palestinian resistance.

One year on, Israel has conducted hundreds of attacks on Gaza’s hospitals, killing over 42,400 Palestinians and leaving 23 of the 38 hospitals in the enclave completely non-operational, while the rest are only partially functioning.

The Israeli army has begun suspending dozens of reservists over a letter they signed vowing to refuse to continue their military service unless Israel’s government commits to a ceasefire and seeks a deal to secure the release of Israeli hostages held in occupied Gaza.

The letter — signed by 130 Israeli soldiers — was addressed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, government ministers, and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.

"The suspension of the soldiers, including five who are currently serving in the reserves, began in recent days through phone calls to all the signatories on their behalf — including a call to a soldier serving inside the (Gaza) Strip," Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on October 15.

One soldier described a telephone call as a "threat," while another said his battalion commander conducted a “long reprimand call” that ultimately led to his suspension, the newspaper said.

Israel estimates that 101 captives are still being held in Gaza, while Hamas says many of the hostages have been killed in Israel’s relentless carpet bombing of the besieged enclave.

Efforts led by the US, Egypt, and Qatar to mediate a ceasefire deal and hostage swap between Israel and Hamas have failed due to Netanyahu’s refusal to halt the war while repeatedly imposing new conditions on proposed terms for a ceasefire.

Israel’s brutal year-long assault on Palestine’s Gaza has severely destroyed the enclave’s infrastructure, forcing mass numbers of Palestinians to flee their homes and take shelter in makeshift tent camps.

The tents sheltering displaced Palestinian families in Gaza have repeatedly come under attack by Israeli forces in their relentless bombardment of the besieged territory since October last year, resulting in thousands of casualties, including women and children.

Here’s a look at some of the Israeli attacks on displaced Palestinians' tents.

Two-thirds of buildings in Palestine’s Gaza now lie in ruins after a year of relentless Israeli bombardment. A UN estimate suggests it would take up to 14 years to clear the immense amount of rubble throughout the enclave, but even if the war were to stop today, the damage caused by Israel’s bombs will continue to kill Palestinians for decades.

Every time a building is detonated, a substantial amount of dust is released into the atmosphere, releasing toxic fibres that are easily inhaled, while also seeping into groundwater and soil and spreading its impact beyond the site of destruction.

The real damage occurs when the dust carries hazardous materials such as organics, heavy metals and asbestos – a building material particularly prevalent in Gaza’s decades-old refugee camps.

The UN Environment Programme estimates that 2.3 million tonnes of debris generated by the war may be contaminated with these materials.

The release of asbestos and exposure to it pose an array of health hazards, with diseases taking 10 to 50 years to emerge. This means Israel’s onslaught places Gaza’s population under threat of cancers and other diseases for years to come.

Meanwhile, human remains from the 10,000 people feared to be trapped under the rubble, unexploded ordnance and sewage leaks provide a breeding ground for harmful chemicals, triggering the spread of diseases among Palestinians.

Israeli forces are planting explosives in homes and employing booby-trapped robots equipped with tons of explosives in northern Gaza, according to a report published on Monday by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor.

The report reveals that Israeli forces began using these robots for the first time in Gaza, in May, during Israel's second incursion into the Jabalia refugee camp.

The rights group stated it has received numerous testimonies of Israeli forces using these remotely detonated robots, which cause widespread destruction to nearby homes and buildings and result in significant loss of life, while also severely hindering the efforts of civil defence and ambulance crews.

The group confirmed that Israel "has expanded its operations of destruction and demolition of residential buildings in areas of its incursion in northern Gaza, employing three methods: aerial bombardment, explosive robots, and the planting of explosives in homes for demolition."

"Israel's use of booby-trapped robots is prohibited under international law," the Geneva-based organisation said in a statement on Sunday. "Due to their nature, they directly hit civilians, or hit military targets, civilians or civilian property indiscriminately ... Those who survive direct killing and bombardment remain at risk of dying from hunger or thirst, as Israeli forces are preventing any aid from entering northern Gaza, while also destroying and burning bakeries there, in addition to razing what was left of water wells."

Over 200,000 people in north Gaza remain in the rubble of destroyed homes and shelters. Another 200,000 face bombing as well as lack of food and basic necessities due to the blockade, putting over 400,000 residents in northern Gaza at risk of forced starvation, displacement and death.

Escalating tensions in the Middle East led to a dramatic 56 percent drop in Red Sea shipping traffic in September 2024 compared to the previous year as vessels have been rerouting around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, according to data from the ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic.

Retaliatory attacks by the Houthis on commercial ships linked to Israel in response to Israel’s strikes on Palestine’s Gaza have made the Red Sea a riskier route. This has especially affected container and LNG (liquefied natural gas) vessels, with traffic plunging by 73 percent and 87 percent, respectively.

In contrast, shipping traffic around the Cape of Good Hope has surged, with container ship transits spiking at 420%. Despite longer journeys and therefore, increased costs, this alternative route has become the safer option in the last year, significantly impacting global shipping patterns and freight rates.

Freight costs rose sharply, with rates for 40ft (12-metre) containers peaking at $6,000 in July 2024. Though prices have since eased, they remain 116% higher than in December 2023, continuing to affect global supply chains.
