Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed close to 42,000, according to the health ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza, whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations. The war has left much of Gaza in ruins and has left its population of 2.4 million facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Fighting is now also spreading to other fronts in the region, notably to Lebanon, where Israel's battle with Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah is intensifying.

📷 80 years ago, in the tumult of World War II, Agence France-Presse (AFP) was born. On 20 August 1944, after four years of German occupation, a group of Resistance journalists stormed a pro-Nazi newsroom in Paris. "Nobody moves, nobody leaves," shouted Claude Martial-Bourgeon, the eldest in the group. "From now on you work for France, and not the Germans." The building had once been home to Havas, the world’s first international news agency, and had been turned into a channel for Nazi propaganda. Five days later Paris was liberated and AFP journalist Basile Tesselin got the scoop. "General Leclerc entered Paris this morning, at 8:45...," he reported on 25 August. AFP's first stories were printed on early stencil duplication Roneo machines and distributed by cyclists to newspapers and Resistance offices across the city. In 2024, AFP is still headquartered at the same address, and has expanded to cover more than 150 countries, becoming one of the world's biggest news agencies.

📷 France bids a reluctant farewell to a fortnight of Olympic sport as athletes headed home from Paris praised a dazzling edition of the Games. Hollywood star Tom Cruise abseiled into the national stadium descending on a wire in front of 71,500 spectators, grabbed the Olympic flag and jumped onto a motorbike, to the delight of thousands of dancing athletes and awe-struck fans. American gymnastics icon Simone Biles joined Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass as the Olympic flag was formally handed over, also celebrating the United States coming out on top in the medal count. The final act of the Paris Olympics brought relief that an event foreshadowed by worries about terror attacks, strikes or protests had passed off with barely a hitch.

📷 300 days of war in Gaza have left at least 39,480 people dead in the besieged territory, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Strip. Most of Gaza's 2.4 million residents have been displaced multiple times and are facing a dire humanitarian situation. The assassination of Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh in a 31 July strike in Iran has heightened regional tensions. The escalation has intensified concerns among Israelis over the fate of the 111 hostages still held in Gaza, including 39 confirmed dead by the Israeli military. As the war nears 10 months, no ceasefire deal is in sight. The war in Gaza erupted after members of the militant group Hamas carried out the worst attack in Israeli history on 7 October 2023. Israel responded with a devastating military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Nearly 7,000 athletes will sail six kilometres down the Seine. A huge artistic display that will take place during the event has been kept tightly under wraps.
