A crazy story from Yahara sensei about the Kenshusei course.
There were 7 people enrolled in my stream: Osaka, myself, Saito, Sasaki, and three others. Training was not easy, but it wasn't the hardest challenge.
For example, on the first night after class, the senpai invited us to dinner. On one side sat the recruits, and on the other side sat Yano and Tanaka. Yano poured sake for one of them and said, "Wow, what a good boy! Give me another one! Eat the meat, drink sake with the meat." And so it went on until he threw up on the table.
"What do you think you're doing? It's not good? Pick up your vomit and put it back in your mouth!" While the first trainee was following the orders of the "grandfathers," the second trainee also vomited from such a scene. And he was forced to "clean up after himself."
Only Osaka and I survived to graduation: one of us went crazy from missing punches, another had his jaw blown off by Abe-sensei, and three others couldn't cope with the physical and emotional strain. After all, among other things, they had to wash senior karategi, wash dishes for them, serve tea, and the like. I was the only one who didn’t.
When my gaze met Yano's, he’d say, "Come on out - we'll work light." But the minute he missed a punch, it was a slaughter. One day he grabbed me by the throat, lifted me up, and choked me against the wall. I fell down barely alive, started crawling across the floor to grab his legs. In return, he kicked me in the heel. I woke up immobilized in the ambulance.
I never really thought about quitting. These stories made me think about how I could win the next time. In fact, I was lucky enough to survive and complete the course in two years instead of the required three.
