The Judo Coach
Rules have been released ... IJF has released a written statement regarding the rules. I am looking forward to the video walk-through, so I fully understand it.
But initial thoughts (but I might be misinterpreting them) in no particular order ...
1. I am not sure why they are bringing back a Yuko if you can only score it on the ground?
2. No idea what the grabbing below the leg rule will mean for the action on the mat ... I just hope it doesn't slow the fight down, with every action below the belt being checked by the video referee all the time to work out where the inner thigh starts.
3. I think the attack every 30 seconds from once you get a grip will encourage more drop techniques (hit and run attacks) and will not be that practical to implement for heavy-weight judo.
4. Positive action in ne-waza should have always been taken into consideration. But it will favour the person already winning the contest and should be used as a tactic to waste time on the floor to secure the win.
5. Interested in knowing how they will judge someone 'unintentionally' leaving the contest area.
6. I am glad reverse seoi-nage is back in.
7. I think using the head to attack and defend is sensible for elite-level judo and will encourage bigger throws and escapes.
What are your thoughts on the new rules.
You can see the rules here: www.ijf.org/news/show/judo-presents-the-new-rules?…

The Judo Coach
It was great having Rustam Orujov and Orkhan Safarov at the Woking dojo today.
Dojo LaunchPad was set up to help coaches in the UK grow and scale their judo clubs.
However, coaches worldwide face similar challenges when starting and growing their judo clubs and making a living from what they love.
Today, we focussed on fee structure, developing coaches, creating additional revenue, and ensuring their clubs are set up to help them work toward their long-term goals.
We really look forward to seeing how their clubs develop.
Thanks to Mike Callan for asking Dojo LaunchPad to be involved.

Maximise Your Uchi-Komi Training: Essential Tips for All Skill Levels.
Do you sometimes feel like you are 'going through the motions' with your uchi-komi?
Whether you are a white or black belt in judo, sometimes it is easier to become lazy within your uchi-komi and only use it to warm your body up to be ready for randori.
But no matter your grade or the technique you are practising, there is always something to work on.
In this YouTube tutorial, I talk to our adult class about what they should be focussing on in their uchi-komi. I think it is beneficial for all judoka hence sharing it here!

In this week's podcast I talk to Olympian Ben Fletcher about:
🎯 Breaking his leg.
🎯 Trying to prepare for the World Tour during Covid-19.

Are you a black belt if you've never fought for the grade?
No ... don't answer the question, at least not yet.
The latest podcast looks at this question and talks to someone who has achieved their black belt through the British Judo Association technical Dan grade syllabus.
I really enjoyed doing this interview ... once you've listened to the podcast let me know your thoughts.
