The Closer Look

Ever since starting The Closer Look, my goal has been to help writers better their craft. While breaking down movies has helped me realise this, I’ve always felt I had more to offer than mere advice to writers out there.

I’ve just discovered what that something is.

There’s an issue nearly every writer struggles with, yet no one anywhere has devised a working solution to it. I don’t want to give the game away quite yet, but of the 10 writers I’ve secretly pitched the idea to, the response has been unanimous enthusiasm.

I’m currently hiring programmers to help design a sophisticated Discord server where this project will be hosted. No ordinary bot will do; this will require a substantial amount of custom work.

Thank you so much for 1 million subscribers!

It’s been a good 6 years since I started The Closer Look, but I never imagined I’d get this far.

In all honesty, I ran a gaming channel for 4 years trying to ‘make it big’, but it never worked, and in the end I only got 7k subs there so I quit. I decided to start The Closer Look purely as a hobby, having fully given up on my dream of being a YouTuber full-time.

Then I uploaded my first TCL video on The Joker... and it’s currently at 2.4 million views. I was used to getting maybe 200 views on my old crappy gaming vids if I was lucky. The numbers are so high now I can’t even process them.

It’s been a hell of a ride, and I’m going to be uploading much more consistently going forward... starting with 2 videos coming out next week! One is a rather fun one defending pure evil villains, and breaking down why sometimes evil villains are much better than sympathetic ones.

The other is a true mammoth of a video essay on Star Wars I’ve been working on for over a year now. It’s nearly 2 hours long, and is a full breakdown of why the franchise is in such a sorry state, but more importantly, how it can be revived and made great once again.

I don’t normally get political, but the situation in Iran is growing worse by the day and it’s time we did something to help. Hundreds of civilians, some of them children, have been murdered so far by the police because they’re criticising the government. One man was killed because he merely honked his car horn in approval of a protest.

If that happened in a western country, it would dominate the news cycle for an entire month, but magically, tragically, the moment it reaches a certain threshold of however many miles away from our homes, it’s like nobody cares, because nobody talks about it. I only found out because a friend in Iran sent me the video, I wouldn’t dare share it in this post; it’s… upsetting to say the least.

It’s very easy to just sit back, feel sorry for these brave protesters who are literally being massacred, but to do nothing more, to do nothing but feel pity. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. Please do not play into this rule. People are dying, many children. This is not something we can merely watch passively on our screens, especially when there is something very easy and impactful we can do.

Wherever you live, USA, UK, EU, you have local politicians, and if you are appalled by the repugnant evil perpetrated by Iran’s government, call on your local politicians and let them know exactly how you feel, and demand they take action such as imposing sanctions on Iran’s government. Compose a simple email, or reach out to them on twitter. It only takes a moment, not even 5 minutes.

My friend in Iran says international pressure is making a huge impact, and that the tiny amount of sanctions already imposed are making a very tangible difference for the better.

How do you feel about the MCU shows on Disney plus? Are they good, or bad for the franchise?
