Hey there Cartoon fam! This week's shot Friend by @weebl , is an exciting short/music video that will blow you away! We wanted to bring you behind the curtains to get some insight behind it all, let me introduce Weebl’s Stuff!
Cartoon Hangover: So obviously you and the team behind this have worked hard to bring this video to life. Tell me a bit of how this happened, the music, the animation, all of it! How did this video come about?
Weebl’s Stuff: We started Savlonic as an animated band in 2008 and this animation is from the next album, Ultraviolet. Work on this began 5 years ago before lockdown threw everything into chaos. Fortunately that gave me time to learn Blender, assemble a team including a character modeler, 2 riggers and a fantastic young animator. It's been a long journey for sure but this all helps with the next step which is a live 3D show.
Cartoon Hangover: What was the biggest challenge directing an animated music video? Is it more or less challenging than directing an animation that’s not music based?
Weebl’s Stuff: There's similarities obviously but one thing that really needs to be focused on with music videos is action on the beat. I feel you can be a lot more abstract with a music video since you don't need to tell the tale visually, letting the music help define the story. The challenge becomes fitting your scene into the time set by the music. You only have so long and that cannot be extended. You have a lot less wiggle room there.
Cartoon Hangover: What’s the inspiration behind the music? And how does that play a role in the animation itself?
Weebl’s Stuff: The inspiration for this album was taking the sounds we've listened to throughout our lives and mixing them all together whichout caring what genre of music we were making. It's been wonderfully freeing and it's the best thing we've done as a result. No rules! It's about relationships, absence and dealing with our divergences. It's a more grown up album and I think that's informed the style of the animation. Defining spaces with light and shadow.
Cartoon Hangover: Are there any more projects like this to lookout for in the future?
Weebl’s Stuff: Hell yeah! Since the kickstarter is backed we’re already planning the next video for the band which will follow on from Happy Friend. We're also working on a series of shorts for a show I'm calling ZMX.

Hey there Cartoon fam! Last week's shot Wet Hot Chameleon Summer by David Mahler, is a cute and exciting short that meshes real world backgrounds with 2D animation to create a cool mixture of mediums for this short animation. We wanted to bring you some more insight into the mind behind this short so without further adieu, let me introduce David Mahler! @averagehumanproductioncompany
Cartoon Hangover: Hello David, it’s nice to meet you! To start off, why don’t you tell us about yourself and your journey as an artist/animator? Who are your inspirations, what made you start creating art?
David: I'm a comic artist and animator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. I've been drawing forever but started properly animating in middle school. I started out inspired by Blogspots and Livejournals, following creators like Nick Cross, Hobo Divine, Sam Bosma, and the GhibliCon blogspot which I think was one of the first Ghibli fan sites. They'd post scans of the short film brochures from the Museum and other rarities which you could just spend hours poring over. I was on Cartoon Brew everyday, they wrote a lot about Ralph Bakshi and the studio UPA, more limited ways of animating which made it seem possible. They were also sharing a lot of Richard Williams' work, so I ordered the Animator's Survival Kit and spent six months of my last year of school animating a hand-painted music video for a Norwegian band (Firefly Effect - All the Jokes Are on Me). After that was featured on Cartoon Brew I started directing music videos for indie bands which led to a few commercials. I went back to study a Masters of Animation last year, and I'm excited to start production on a new narrative short film in 2025.
Cartoon Hangover: What was the idea behind this animation? Could you ever see this idea expanding into something more narrative based or do you think the appeal lies with the format this animation currently exists in?
David: This short was a hybrid animation test, putting a 2D cartoon in a live action setting. I'd taken the background photos on vacation when I was in high school and had wanted to use them in something for ages. It made sense that the hole in the wall was a little nest, someone's home. They'd have to be tiny, and fit the tropical setting, so I pictured a little lizard. And then the last photo in the sequence, the waterhole, suggested an ending to a story, a punchline - this tiny lizard does a big dramatic run up to a dive, and then we pull back to the wide shot to reveal his itty bitty splash. I'd love to play more with this character, he kind of created himself. He clearly gets super excited about things, he's got a curiosity, and a unique viewpoint, looking up at the big wide world. I'd love to see him go out on more adventures, stumble into trouble in his naivety, but ultimately learn something new and wonderful.
Cartoon Hangover: When gathering real life footage/pictures for the backgrounds, what was the thought process? Did you just film and figure out how it would work within the animation later? Or did you have the shots planned/boarded ahead of time? Did working in two different mediums provide any unique challenges that you had to overcome?
David: The story really did come out of the images, maybe that was the result of sitting on them for over a decade. They were just photos I took that eventually felt like they should be strung together, they fit. Of course this is the opposite of how you should work! I usually go script to storyboard, but here it was like the images created a storyboard that was in need of a story. My first degree was general filmmaking, I love good lighting and lenses, and part of the goal here was compositing the 2D character to fit within the space, to match the lights and shadows. That was probably the biggest challenge in juggling the two mediums.
Cartoon Hangover: Do you have any other projects or animations you would like to talk about? What are you working on?
David: I'm really focused on a graphic novel at the moment, called You and Me and Us and We. I've been colouring it for years and years and it's finally ready to send off to publishers. Fingers crossed that goes somewhere. I'm about to start pre-production on that new animated short, inspired by my Swiss heritage and addressing climate change and plastic waste. It's another hybrid production, the plan is to build and shoot miniature sets before traditionally animating all the characters and effects. And finally I've been chipping away at a few project pitches. The best part of going back to uni was to learn how to get up on stage and pitch an idea. I've got stacks, and I can't wait to share them with the world.
Cartoon Hangover: And where can we find more of your work? What’s your socials?

Hey there Cartoon fam! I'm super excited to talk to you about this week's shot Dungeon Follies by Eric Martin. This cartoon has so much personality and I think will be a big hit especially if you're a fan of things like D&D, Adventure Time or Over The Garden Wall. The best part is that Eric has multiple episodes ready to go so for the first time in Shots history over the next few weeks you'll be treated to an ongoing series! I hope you join us for the ride! Make sure to check out Dungeon Follies and check out this conversation I had with Eric!
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us a little about yourself and your journey as an artist/animator? What are some of your inspirations?
Eric: I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania. Moved to Philly and started my animation career making a YouTube series called "Coffeebot" with some amazing friends. After that, I moved to Southern California to try and break into the animation studio scene. I've always wanted to make my own show, so I decided to just throw caution to the wind and just start making it without anyone's permission.
I've been inspired by a lot of older cartoons & comics lately - from Astro Boy & Looney Tunes to Carl Barks' Donald Duck comics and Pogo. I've also taken a lot of inspiration from things from my childhood like (god, this will date me) Pajama Sam & Homestar Runner.
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us a bit about the world of Dungeon Follies. This is the first time that audience members are going to get treated to an ongoing series with Shots, what do they have to look forward to in the weeks ahead?
Dungeon Follies mixes the heartfelt characters of Calvin & Hobbes with the whimsical tone of Over the Garden Wall. It takes place in a vast lich's dungeon with endless chambers and minions trying to make it the spookiest lair possible.
Whiff is the new-guy in the dungeon and is trying to find his "Unfinished Biz" in the afterlife. People can expect to meet a big cast of silly characters, heartfelt explorations about finding your purpose, and of course, riddles!
Cartoon Hangover: How long have you been developing Dungeon Follies? What's been your favorite part of the journey?
Eric: I've been making Dungeon Follies for a little over a year now. My favorite part of the journey has been watching it turn into something I didn't expect. It was supposed to be a one-off project about D&D, but it turned into this series about a ghost with feelings. My favorite part of making these cartoons is when I put all the pieces of the episode together. When I compile the drawings with all the FX, music, and voices - it's like watching a magic trick come together every time.
Cartoon Hangover: Are you working on anything else you'd like people to check out?
Eric: Dungeon Follies is my main artistic venture at the moment - go see more episodes on Instagram (@dungeonfollies). If people want to see more of my storyboard work, check my website: erictmartin.com or my motion graphic portfolio: erictmartin.webflow.io. I'm always open to collaboration and chatting about my work!

Hey Hangover fans! This week's shot is by @Soleildiddle and features everything you could want from a cartoon; a blood thirsty princess, cute animals a GIANT WORM! Seriously what's better then that? We wanted to give you a little insight into what it takes to create a world like this by doing a small interview with the creator of the cartoon, Pia! So enjoy this interview and enjoy Pia's cartoon Sweet Reign here on Cartoon Hangover! youtube.com/shorts/QrnR5GxHM0U
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started as an artist/animator?
Pia: Well my name is Pia Haywood,I'm a black-filipino artist, who just enjoys making cartoons and art in my own free time! I started drawing in general as a kid! Tracing Archie sonic characters from comic books to just drawing whatever up till now, honestly it's been a great time!
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us more about the world of Sweet Reign, the bright colored outlines, the super saturated colors, the giant worm! What were your main inspirations and is this part of a larger project you're working on?
Pia: Sweet Reign is a world full of cute creatures with horrible personalities who inhabit different kingdoms across the board, and I say that with affection! I think there's some sort of hierarchy when it comes to those critters. We have the monstrous worm that has no other thoughts but to harm. Belle's kind which are some sort of barbarian demon teddys, and finally the toy-like citizens who don't have that many thoughts behind their beady eyes. I took inspiration from the media I was consuming at the time when I animated it. The colored outlines were inspired by the anime 'Mob Psycho 100', I suppose the cute critters took inspo from the game 'Cult of the Lamb' ! If possible I'd love to continue Belle's chaotic little story of reluctant queendom, but I'll see whatever the future holds for that haha!
Cartoon Hangover: Where can people follow more of your work?

Hey there Cartoon Hangover fans! I can't believe we're in July already! If you're in the US happy 4th and do me a favor and try not to do what the main character of our new Shot, Firestarter, did and burn your house down this weekend! And speaking of Firestarter check out this interview with it's creator Dameron and check out Firestarter here: youtube.com/shorts/cOkJts_p_FM
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us about yourself and how you got started as an artist/animator? Was there anything in particular that really inspired you?
Dameron: I was inspired by cartoons on TV, but didn't think it was possible for me to do myself. One day, I came across a Game Grumps fan animation on YouTube by Scottfalco. That led me down a rabbit hole of YouTube animations which made me find videos on how to do animations. I started on Flipnote Studio on my Nintendo DSI. I then received a android tablet for my birthday and started drawing and animating on it. Getting used to it, I created my own channel and start posting random animation videos. Although I don't frequently post nowadays, I still work on personal projects and passion projects in indie studios.
Cartoon Hangover: Is there more to the world of Firestarter? The backgrounds and character design seem really involved so I'm curious to know if this is a setting you plan on doing more with!
Dameron: I'm honestly not sure. It was a random idea that I kinda did some improvisation on without getting too deep.
Cartoon Hangover: Are there any other projects you're excited about? Where should people check out more of your work?
Dameron: I'm currently working on a few projects within my own studio and an indie studio I'm at, but not any personal projects at the moment.
You can check out my work on my YouTube channel Dafrogeron
youtube.com/@dafrogeron?si=KE2EOVXbUkC0qzst
I post every once in awhile, but soon I should be posting more frequently. I post more on it Instagram then YouTube at the moment.

New Wednesday, new Cartoon Hangover Shot! This week our shot comes to us from @Alistocrat and is about a multiversal Thrift store! Make sure to check it out here: youtube.com/shorts/DZDUmP1BjYs Alistair was kind enough to answer some questions for us about his cartoon!
CH: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started as an artist/animator?
Alistair: I’m an Animator and Story Artist based in the UK! I’ve always been inspired by animations’ ability to tell wildly imaginative and resonant stories. Ever since growing up with Cartoon Networks 2010s golden age I’ve known storytelling through animation is what I wanted to do. Particularly I’m interested in exploring ideas of philosophy, emotional intelligence and incomprehensible forbidden knowledge not meant for the eyes of humanity through the lens of silly sci-fi and fantasy cartoons!
CH: What inspired the setting of the thrift store in Hugo's Mind Palace? I feel like that's such a unique setting compared to where you see a lot of shows set with characters in this age range.
Alistair: I’m very much inspired by animated shows like The Midnight Gospel and Adventure Time aswell as Sci-Fi stories like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Melding mind-meltingly mad sci fi concepts with the mundane monotony of life is what I live for. I really wanted to capture the lazy chaos of being a 20 something trying to make ends meet in an old rinky dink store. I want to appeal to that confusing young adult age range where nothing makes sense, between the naivety of childhood and cynicism of adulthood. As for the thrift store itself, my mum owns an art shop here in the UK and ever since I was a teenager I’ve always been inspired by the strange sculptures, jewellery and artefacts she’d have on display from artists across the world. I started imagining where these things might come from, if not from our universe. Which is where the idea to bring objects from other dimensions to pawn off to humans came in! Throw in a bit of esoteric psychedelic imagery and you got Hugo’s Mind Palace!
CH: Are you working on anything else right now that you're excited by?
Alistair: Yes! I have a short form series I’m working on at the moment called Mall Wizard! It has a similar concept of melding extraordinary characters and ideas with mundane retail life, but this time it’s a fantasy wizard wreaking havoc in a mid-2000s Hot Topic style store in a shopping mall. You can tell I have a particular brand of storytelling I can’t get away from…

This Week's Cartoon Hangover Shot is by @tpbanned and his partner Joana Fishbein. This is one of our favorites so far and that's due in part to it's really personal touch and relatability for anyone that's had to play the dating game. We were super excited to chat to Tarun about this! and make sure to check out the Shot here: youtube.com/shorts/oURQvMIwbZI
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you get started as an artist/animator?
Tarun: My name is Tarun Padmakumar. I'm an animator from South India. Growing up, I would draw constantly and fantasize about being an animator but I had no clue it was a viable choice of career. When I went to design college, I used to sneak into the class next door that taught animation and I was lucky enough to make friends with animation students who really inspired me.
From there it was a lot of tutorials and self teaching and poking my friends into doing funny voices for my shorts!
Cartoon Hangover: What inspired your short? It feels incredibly intimate and personal. Was that hard to pull of in the confines of a couple seconds?
Tarun: My partner and I love to laugh at the trope of the sad emo boy on old teen soap operas. I think one of the boyfriends Rory had on Gilmore Girls was always a mopey guy. We wondered what kind of person would be into that? It was a funny thought and that thought sparked the short! As for the confines of a couple seconds, I think the instinct is to usually make EPIC big ideas but there is a strength in a short quick IDEA. Sometimes a doodle is more effective than a painstakingly done painting that took years to make.
Cartoon Hangover: If people wanted to check out more of your work, where should the go? Are you working on anything right now that you want people to be on the lookout for?
Tarun: I post whenever I can on the gram @tarunto! As for what I'm working on, I feel I'm always working on 5 things. I don't want to tease anything in particular because honestly sometimes I don't know what I will finish making first.

Cartoon Hangover
We've got an early Cartoon Hangover Shot for you this week! And this one is very different then our usual upload. This week we're joined by longtime network member @EIEANIMATIONS who decided to pitch us an entire episode instead of just a short! When we started Shots we never enviisoned something like this happening with it so when Dewald presented us with the opportunity to help share his cartoon with the world we had to jump at it! Make sure to check out Virtually Impossible live on Cartoon Hangover right now!
Cartoon Hangover: Introduce yourself to our community! How long have you been an artist/animator and how long have you been making content for YouTube?
Dewald: Hi there, my name is Dewald de la Rey and I’m a 26 year old animator, writer and director from Cape Town, South Africa. I’m also the owner and head producer over at E.I.E ANIMATIONS, a YouTube channel with 220,000 subscribers and almost 60 million views, where we upload primarily animated horror parodies.
I’ve been creating content on YouTube for over 10 years now and even though it’s been extremely stressful, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m hoping that this show will be the start of my next chapter as a creator on the platform.
Cartoon Hangover: Tell us about your show? What's the pitch for people who maybe aren't familiar with your work?
Dewald: Yung Beathoven is a virtual musician that lives in Metatropolis. Along with his trusty robotic best friend “Brobot”, the two friends set out on a mission to save enough credits so that Yung B can be smuggled out of the virtual realm and follow his dreams of becoming a viral musician in the real world.Through battling an evil french pigeon squad to befriending an irresponsible party bear and trying to get the love of his life, Tiger Lily, to notice him, watch as Yung Beathoven and Brobot get into tricky, weird and often questionable situations, all in an attempt to follow a dream.
Cartoon Hangover: There's a lot of different things going on in Virtually Impossible. What are you drawing inspiration from when you're creating something so eclectic and out there?
Dewald: I’ve always had a huge adoration for film and tv with my main passion being 2D animation! Growing up with shows like Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd and Edd etc, I really wanted my show to have that nostalgic element while also drawing inspiration from modern shows & movies like Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Adventure Time, Family Guy, Phineas & Ferb, Fanboy & ChumChum, Zach Stone is Going To Be Famous, Regular Show etc. I pretty much wanted the show to be a perfect culmination of all my inspirations, drawing from all my favorite aspects to create something unique, slightly cheesy, modern and feel good.
Cartoon Hangover: Where can people find more of your work?
Dewald: You can find me on all social media platforms.
Most Importantly: www.instagram.com/animator.boi or youtube.com/@eieanimations
