Young adults, families, and retired individuals, what’s in the plan for your first day in Greece?🇬🇷 Michael Lane and Dr. Steve Notley will lead you to follow in Paul’s footsteps as he made his way on the Via Egnatia Roman Road from Neapolis, to Philippi, to Amphipolis, to Apollonia, and on to Thessalonica.

The day begins with a brief stop at the port of Neapolis (modern Kavala). Paul's first recorded preaching in Macedonia took place in Philippi. Here, the apostle Paul came and worked (Acts 16:19-40), establishing a strong church. To this congregation, later he sent his Philippian letter. We will visit the ruins of the Agora (marketplace; Acts 16:19), and a Prison where tradition says Paul and Silas had been kept. We drive by the river (just outside Philippi) where it is thought Lydia was baptized (Acts 16:14 -15). Next is Amphipolis, with impressive Roman architecture, where Paul passed through on his way to Thessalonica.

According to the Bible, the city of Geshur is the location in which King David’s son fled, to the north and the south of The Sea of Galilee. Archaeologists have excavated various lands throughout history to discover the true location of Geshur, and Dr. Steven Notley suggests a site that fits what the Biblical description relays, reflecting what we are seeing with archaeology and other ancient sources. “Greece has always been a dream destination for me ever since I was a child. My ancestry from my father’s side is Greek and Turkish, and my middle name is Yia Yia’s (Grandmother in Greek) name, Athena. Viewing ruins in Athens, such as the Acropolis, the Greek Mythological statues, and the beginnings of the Olympic games, was quite exciting. Knowing that Paul preached in Athens near the Acropolis was thrilling to us. The Areopagus was the name of the hill (Mars Hill) just west of the Acropolis where he preached. Acts 17:16–34.”
