Do you speak the language of tiddlywinks? From squidger and winks to nurdle and squopping out, the game’s lexicon is indicative of the deep strategy involved in playing it and the passion of its players, aka winkers. For decades, MIT alumni have been among the world champions of the fiercely competitive game.
In November 2022, Jennifer Yang ’97 and her husband opened Covalent Spirts, a craft distillery, tasting room, and event space in Maryland. “I studied biology and chemistry, and I’ve always loved science,” this Course 7 alum explains. “Now I get to play with that every single day in a different kind of way.”
Sheila Xu ’14 never imagined she could become a pilot, but she says MIT put her on that path. Born deaf to hearing parents, Xu first learned American Sign Language and connected with the Deaf community as an undergraduate. These experiences inspired her to want to open doors for more people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Andy Cavatorta SM ’10 got his big break while pursuing his master’s degree at the MIT Media Lab. Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk came by the lab to see what the students were working on; she liked his work and ended up commissioning Cavatorta to create sound sculptures for her.
His piece “Whale” is currently on exhibition at the MIT Museum. Made of maple, steel, plastic tubing, and 14 spinning rotors, the sculpture emits an eerie song intended to last for 225 years—the lifespan of a bowhead whale.
Jessica Banks SM ’01, ENG ’07 is the co-host of Netflix’s “Hack My Home,” a reality show featuring design, engineering, and construction experts who team up to help homeowners maximize their spaces.
