Mamie used the brutal murder of her only son Emmett Till (1955) to expose the savage violence that undergirded southern racism. Her decision to have an open casket funeral sparked the Civil Rights Movement. Mamie became a crusader for civil rights and educator for CPS enriching lives of all she encountered; establishing the Emmett Till Players, a touring troupe, in 1978. Mamie's autobiography published in 2003.
