“It has an old-school flavor, and the lyrics are pretty restrained—not overly wordy, which is nice for me because I can get a little carried away sometimes. The last record was so deep with orchestral parts, we steered away from that with this one. But there is that nice string break that Nate did, which I love. There’s no studio trickery. It starts so pretty and ends a little psychotic. It makes me think of a cartoon.”

“It’s essentially a sister song to ‘El Capitan,’ the same story written with a different ending: kind of pleading the person to stay. To lay back down. They’re pretty much opposite ideas about the same relationship. I think we all have been in relationships where you think it’s the most important thing that will ever happen. And it never really is, sadly. I think that type of feeling lasts for a while and eventually departs but it leaves a mark.”

“Even though each line starts out the same way, you can do a lot of things within the structure. Obviously, you can hate anything. [laughs] There are some things that you just straight-up hate, and then there are some things you hate because they didn’t work out: ‘I hate the way you turn and walk away.’ I have maybe been on the extreme end of [hating on religion], but at the end of the day, I think whatever gives people a purpose or brings them joy or comfort or community, those are all good things. I try to not turn into the thing I despise, which is believing that you’re right about everything and you have the answers. Because I’m not and I don’t. You know, I hate myself sometimes—so everything is fair game.”

“Alex Levine and I wrote a lot of the songs together, but ‘Rainbow Overpass’ is the one that is a true duet. He’s kind of my hype man on a lot of these songs–Beastie Boys style but here he takes a verse. If you haven’t listened to The So So Glos, there’s a record called Blowout that’s a good starting point. They’re actually from Brooklyn, not fake Brooklyn, and they do a lot of that. They grew up on punk rock and hip hop, so there are a lot of little bursts of other voices throughout that I like. It creates energy. Sometimes music can feel flat until you get into a live situation when there’s adrenaline and an audience. Instead of working in reverse where that happens as we tour, I was trying to capture some of that on the record.”
