Ibn Sirin said: "A man asking his brother, 'Are you a believer?' is a trial and an innovation, just as the Khawarij used to test people."
When Imam Bukhari entered Nishapur, some people tested him with the issue of whether the Qur'an is created or not. Bukhari responded: "The Qur'an is the speech of Allah, uncreated, and the actions of the servants are created. Testing people is an innovation."
1. I know many Salafis view MIAW as a symbol of pure, uncompromising tawhid and this is due to the influence of his Kitab al-Tawhid, which is a book, in substance, mostly comprised of a selection of ayat from the Quran. So for someone to attack MIAW, it's like someone attacking Quran-based tawhid. But the most problematic things about MIAW are not directly in Kitab al-Tawhid; they're in his other writings and his life story.
I humbly request my Salafi brothers to give me a chance to present my case over the course of 3 video essays that I've been working on for the past months. Judge my critique once you've seen all the evidence.
2. I am still Athari and have all the same affinity towards the Athari/Hanbali theological school and its emphasis on understanding Islam by prioritizing the understanding of the Salaf. But many of MIAWs teachings contradict these commitments, sometimes in severe ways. MIAW should not be seen as representing Hanbalism or even Imam Ibn Taymiyya. He diverges from them in significant ways, as I hope to present to you in the near future if Allah wills.
