Since the #Kumbh Mela has begun I would do a few posts on the #SamudraManthan which resulted in the attainment of #Amrit, the elixir of Immortality.

The Churning of the Cosmic Ocean that the Kumbh Mela commemorates, is the rare instance when #Devas & #Asuras collaborated to achieve a common goal. It is one of the most celebrated events from our Purans and one that is represented in the biggest Hindu Temple of the world at #AngkorWat as well as Bangkok International Airport!

There are many interpretations of the Samudra Manthan, but at a cosmic level I believe it is symbolic of the primeval opposing forces in the Universe coming together to create all things of value that exist today.

At a personal level, the churning of Ocean also reflects the battle between our own inner demons and angels to bring out the best from within us.

Many parts of the country are celebrating harvest festivals that are scientifically linked to the change of seasons governed by the Sun's movement. It is perhaps the right time to know about the Sun-god #Surya.

The worship of Sun-god was not restricted to Indian sub-continent alone but was spread over the ancient world - He was called #Apollo in #GreekMythology and the cult of #Sol Invictus was extremely popular in ancient Rome. The Mayans called him #Hunahpu, Aztecs named him #Tonatiuh, Japanese revered him as #Chupkamui, Babylonians called him Aja & Egyptians worshipped him as #Ra. 

Clearly, the ancient civilizations realized much better than us how important the Sun was for life on this planet even if we, knowing all the scientific facts, seem to have forgotten it!

🕉 The #Mahakumbh in #prayagraj shall begin from this #MakarSankranti so let's know a little about its origins!

Our Purans have numerous mentions of people gathering at the Sangam or confluence of rivers at certain occasions & the Mahakumbh that occurs every 12 years provides millions of devotees an occasion where ideas are exchanged by people visiting from different corners of the country.

#Kumbhmela celebrates the biggest event mentioned in our scriptures - #SamudraManthan - which was perhaps a celestial event where opposing forces, mentioned in our Purans as #Devas and #Asuras, resulted in the churning of basic elements of our Universe to produce precious riches culminating in the elixir of immortality or #Amrit.

The #Kumbh actually refers to the pot in which Amrit was carried by #Dhanvantari, the God of #Ayurveda whose appearance caused a struggle between Devas and Asuras. It is believed that during that tussle few drops of Amrit fell at four places and people are advised to take a dip in the waters at specific times to obtain their benefit.

This #seasonal gathering at the time of #wintersolstice helps in promoting physical, mental as well as spiritual health and reflects the #Ayurvedic principles of Ritu-charya or an individual's alignment with the changing seasons of Nature.

🕉 Lesson from ancient #Indian History - Did you know #Audumbaras, an ancient tribe living in the western #Himalayas with their capital at modern #Pathankot, had issued coins for Brahmarishi #Vishwamitra at least 100 years before the birth of Christ?

In these coins issued by Dharaghosha, king of the Audumbaras in circa 100 BCE, the text around the standing figures mentions his name in #Kharoshthi script!

Some Purans mention #Udumbara amongst the #Gotras of #Kaushik Brahmins thereby making them the descendants of Vishwamitra & that is probably why they issued coins in the honor of their ancestor.

All of us enjoy food 🥙 especially in the winters, but did you know, the #BhagvadGeeta says that food taken only for sense gratification causes the sin associated with killing other living beings while food offered first to God becomes a blessing or #prasadam & takes away sin.

The #Yajurveda mentions a prayer to be recited before eating and it goes like this:

ओ3म् अन्नपतेSन्नस्य नो देह्यनमीवस्य शुष्मिणः |
प्र प्रदातारं तारिष ऊर्ज्जं नो धेहि द्विपदे चतुष्पदे ||
ओ3म् शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः!

हे अन्न के दाता सब विध अन्न प्रदान करो,
जो रोग दूर रख पुष्टि प्रदान करे,
अन्न देने वाले का मंगल करो,
सब प्राणी द्विपद और चतुष्पद,
पाएं भोजन जो उर्जा प्रदान करे ।

O Lord of Food, grant us a share of food,
Invigorating food that brings no sickness.
Onward, ever flourishing, lead the giver of food.
Grant energy to all of us & to all birds & quadrupeds.

So next time you have a hearty meal don't forget to say this Prayer to wish health & energy for all living beings to turn your food into prasad! 😊

Born to Rishi #Atri & #Anasuya Mata, #DattaGuru is considered a great #Yogi & his teachings are captured in the #AvadhutGita & #TripuraRahasya.

The #Bhikshu #Upanishad calls him one of the #Paramahansas who take only eight mouthfuls of food everyday, live clothed or naked at the foot of trees, ruined houses, or burning grounds, and survive on alms taken without any distinction of caste, looking upon everything as Āṭmā alone.

🕉 We all know that #Brahmastra, the weapon of #Brahma Dev is one of the most powerful weapons in the Universe but have you ever heard of #Brahma himself using it?

Leave aside Brahmastra, we never even read about Brahma Dev ever taking up arms against any demon unlike the other gods of the Trinity. Can you imagine if the Srishti-karta actually did fight a war how cool would it be?

Today am sharing a story from the #padmapurana that actually mentions Brahma-Dev killing a demon using just his lotus!! As the legend goes, a demon named #Vajranabha was planning to kill #Devas who were assembling at #Pushkar to meet Brahma who had taken a rare break from the Brahmaloka.

However, Brahma realized what the #Asura was up to & simply dropped the lotus in his hand causing such a tumult that the entire place was shaken up & the demon died in the earthquake!

The name 'Pushkar' comes from this incident of the creator-god dropping a 'Pushpa' at that spot so next time you hear people talking about #Pushpa 1 or 2, tell them about the OG Pushpa incident & increase their knowledge. 😉
