Combat Self Defense

Got a few updates for everyone.

Secondly, after a lot of consideration and consultation, I have decided to retire "Combat Self Defense" as the channel name.
When I started the channel back in 2020, I was 27 years old, teaching Kajukenbo in the middle of a global pandemic. I saw the world falling into more and more violence, meanwhile I was being forced to teach people kata and say "this is self defense." The channel came out as a reaction to all this - with a sole focus of spreading what I believed was "real" martial arts for self defense.

Fast forward 4 years, and the channel has expanded well beyond self defense - for a few reasons. Firstly, there's only so much I can say about the topic that isn't a) said better by the likes of ‪@staysafemartialarts‬ or ‪@hard2hurt‬, and b) doesn't fall on deaf ears who think kenpo dick kicks are all you need. But secondly, my interest in martial arts goes beyond personal protection, and martial arts as a whole can offer a lot more than protecting yourself from bullies and drunks.

Whenever I go to plan out videos, I have been forced to ask myself "how does this fit in with the mission statement of Combat Self Defense?" After having to reject several dozen ideas that I was passionate about, while struggling to come up with ideas that DID fit within the "self defense," paradigm, I realized my mission statement had changed.

And so, in order to make sure the content I'm producing is consistent with the theme and name of the channel, we will be doing a rebrand here in the coming months. Something more consistent with the idea of exploring and sharing martial arts for fighting, combat sports, and yes, self defense.
To wit, we will kick off the rebrand with a series of videos focusing on me training in new martial arts - martial arts that I wouldn't deem fit for self defense, but look like a lot of fun and hard training nonetheless.

Took my fight team to the Duncanville IKF over the weekend. We took a 9 person team - 5 of whom who never competed before - and brought back 3 medals. I’m insanely proud of this crew, and honored that they call me coach.
