Chinese tech giant Huawei launched its latest HarmonyOS NEXT on Oct. 22 during an event in Shenzhen, China. The new version of its operating system is the fifth iteration of HarmonyOS and is built independently of the Android architecture, unlike previous versions that partially relied on the Android Open Source Project.

The open-source operating system is designed for various devices including intelligent screens, smartphones, tablets, wearables, and cars.

Since Huawei was placed on the U.S. “Entity List” in 2019, the company has been unable to work with U.S. firms like Google, which has led to the focus on developing its own ecosystem.

HarmonyOS NEXT is China’s first domestic mobile operating system and the third-largest mobile operating system in the world, following Apple’s iOS and Android. The operating system has been installed on over one billion devices, Huawei says.

Federal prosecutors in Mexico say they have uncovered a conspiracy involving police, prosecutors, and forensic examiners in Sinaloa to cover up the murder of Héctor Cuén, a political opponent of the state’s ruling-party governor, Gov. Ruben Rocha.

Federal prosecutors said on Oct. 20 that the cover-up involved tampering with evidence, including using a blood-stained truck found at the crime scene, and fabricating security footage to mislead the investigation.

Cuén was killed on July 25, 2024, at the same ranch where imprisoned cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was allegedly kidnapped. Zambada claimed in a letter in August that Cuén was murdered during the his kidnapping.

Federal prosecutors revealed on Sunday, Oct. 20 that Cuén’s blood was found at the ranch, despite Gov. Rocha’s claim that Cuén died in a robbery at a gas station. Federal investigators also found discrepancies in the footage that showed Cuén had four gunshot wounds, but only one was heard on security footage, and gas station employees reported hearing none.

They also found that Zambada’s account and evidence that his bodyguard’s bood was on the truck at the scene support a cover-up theory.

Gov. Rocha, backed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, denies involvement. He has so far done little to quell the bloody fighting that broke out between the rival factions of the two Sinaloa drug cartel heads that broke out on July 25.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. The discussions aim to secure the release of hostages taken during the October 7 Hamas attack and work toward ending Israeli bombardment on Gaza.

Sinwar's death has left a leadership gap within Hamas, complicating efforts to move forward with ceasefire negotiations.

Environmental leaders are meeting in Cali, Colombia for the two-week United Nations Biodiversity Conference, also known as the COP16 summit.

This conference follows the signing of a global treaty by 196 countries in Montreal two years ago, committing to implement protective measures for 30 percent of the planet and 30 percent of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

Over the next two weeks, leaders will discuss strategies to combat the dramatic decline in wild species populations and the ongoing threats to biodiversity.

Colombia’s Environment minister Susana Muhammad said that the main objective of the conference is to recognize biodiversity as being as critical as energy transition and decarbonization.

According to the United Nations Environment Program, approximately 1 million plant and animal species are currently at risk of extinction.

The conference will also highlight the the vital role indigenous communities play in environmental protection.

“It’s fundamental that the COP recognizes, promotes and encourages the legalization of their territories,” said Laura Rico, a campaign director at the global activism nonprofit Avaaz.

Advocacy director at Amazon Watch Andrew Miller says that indigenous people are “on the front lines” of fighting the impacts of climate change and protecting biodiversity.

The nonprofit, dedicated to safeguarding the Amazon rainforest, warns that the region faces threats from deforestation, agricultural projects, forest fires, and drought.

The U.S. government is conducting an investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of U.S. classified documents that outline Israeli military plans following Iranian missile attacks on Israel on Oct. 1.

The documents, dated Oct. 16, are attributed to the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency along with the U.S. National Security Agency. They were posted on the Telegram messaging app on Oct. 17 and shared among the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance that includes the U.S., U.K., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

The U.S. is looking to identify the source of the leak, and determining whether it was released by someone within the U.S. intelligence community or a possible hack. Officials are also looking into who had access to the documents prior to their online release.

The Pentagon acknowledged the reports but has not provided further comments. The Israeli military has yet to respond to inquiries about the leaked documents.

Cuba is facing a widespread electricity crisis as Hurricane Oscar approaches. While parts of Havana have regained power, much of the city remains dark, disrupting critical services like water supply.

The crisis worsened after the Antonio Guiteras plant failed on Oct. 18, triggering a nationwide blackout amid ongoing energy distribution issues. By Oct. 19, only 370 megawatts of electricity were available, well below the 3 gigawatts needed. The blackout, the worst since Hurricane Ian in 2022, has led the government to enforce emergency measures, suspending classes and shutting down workplaces.

Hurricane Oscar is expected to bring heavy rain, with forecasts predicting up to 15 inches in some regions. #HurricaneOscar #Cuba #Havana
