I had the pleasure of meeting Nikki Giovanni once in college.
She was promoting her book, "Bicycles" (it's a collection of love poems, so you know I loved it 🥰) and I could not pass up the chance to meet this woman I've admired from afar for so long.
This legend was coming to my school, and I refused to miss it.

When she spoke, all I wanted to do was listen.

I was honored to be in her presence (and couldn't believe how tiny this giant of a woman was standing next to me 😂💛).

She was gracious enough to take a photo with us and she held space for us to speak with her briefly.

I did not know what to say to her... So I simply said "Thank you."

Her honesty and bravery changed my life.
She (along with so many other Black women artists) gave me permission.
She showed me what it was to be someone who, not only survived, but LIVED.

She lived so well.
She enriched so many of us because she was so rich.

She was more than generous with so many of us because she was so much of herself.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

I'm so sad that so many of our giants are transitioning.
Thank you for living. Thank you for being brave and honest.

Thank you for sheltering us with your art and your life. Thank you for allowing us to rest under you until we were strong enough to be brave.

Bless you, Nikki Giovanni.

Thank you for being human.
