Welcome!

Interested in learning surgery? Are you a student, a surgical trainee a surgeon or just someone interested in surgery?

Let me be your guide.

I’m Dr. Erik Pearson and my goal is to scale surgical education and make surgical education approachable.

For the students and residents I want you to be comfortable on the wards, in the ICU, the operating room and of course confident on your exams.

I'm going to discuss a TON of strategies, studying tips, and lessons I've learned over the years as a premed, medical student, surgery resident, pediatric surgery fellow and now attending pediatric surgeon.

I also have a newsletter that comes out with my perspective on healthcare issues, career advice, interesting or inspiring things I've come across in my life as a surgeon, father and husband. It's in our CITIZENSURGEON community that I share new videos, giveaways or live chats.

If that is something that would interest you definitely click the link below and join us!\

It’s important for all to understand and mutations in #BRCA lead to an increase in a variety of cancers, especially #BREAST and #OVARIAN!

As well as many others! Prostate, pancreatic, gastric…what else?

Stay tuned!

New technology alert!

This week I used the KLS Martin Pure Pectus system to repair Pectus excavatum and am the first surgeon in Nevada to offer this to our patients for chest wall reconstruction.

This is an amazing new system and blows away the competition…no contest.

Why?

First the bars are titanium so we minimize the risk of bar allergy that we see with stainless steel bars.

Second is that the bars connect to each other so we minimize, almost eliminate the risk of bar flipping!

I’m very excited to offer this new technology to our patients in Nevada as well keep pushing the line to improve care for kids in our community.

This is not sponsored by KLS Martin but I’ll tell you, it’s a ringing endorsement!

It's not only full of wisdom and amusing anecdotes it serves as a how to guide for some of the most difficult operative situations a surgeon will find themself in with a critical ill trauma patient.

If you want to sign up for the giveaway definitely check out this link and definitely watch the video which is also a review of this Top Knife!

Sign up for the Giveaway right here up until June 4th, 2024! Check out the official rules in the video description. You've got to have a mailing address in the United States to receive the book!

Tomorrow I’m going to bring you a short video on the Top 10 most common operations in the United States!

I thought I did a lot of appendectomies but appendectomy only hit number 13!

What do you think is number one?

And what operation costs the most for our healthcare system?

I'm excited to continue the pediatric surgery series with a problem I see every week in clinic...Umbilical Hernia!

In this video I'm going to demystify the umbilicus and teach you about umbilical hernias and ventral hernias in children.

We're going to discuss why umbilical and ventral hernias develop, how to diagnose them and how to manage them.

Will they go away on their own? Should you operate? When should you operate?

These are the important questions...and I'm going to give you the answers.

This week we're going to crush the appendix! You heard it! Recently I put out a video on what the appendix is and why we have one so I hope you had a chance to watch it!

Doing research on that video I learned that snakes don't have an appendix but rabbits have a really long one...want to know why? Watch the video!

This week two more videos on the appendix...first we're going to learn how to work up appendicitis! This is an awesome video and I think you're going to find a lot of value in it!

I'll take you through how I approach a patient with abdominal pain and rule out appendicitis. We'll go through the history and exam, the necessary labs and options for imaging. I also take you through the clinical prediction rules that are helpful...Alvarado, Pediatric Appendicitis Score and others.

After that we'll go through how to treat appendicitis.

Here we're going to go through the decision...to operate or not operate? This is going to be a good one.

We have closed out the wound healing series and I hope you’ve found these videos awesome and helpful!

We’re going to move on to a series of videos on pediatric surgery topics!

Before then, tomorrow I’m going to answer an important question for you…

What is the appendix?

I’m going to follow that with two videos…

1. How do we work up appendicitis?

2. How can we manage appendicitis?

This is a topic that bridges both adult and pediatric medicine.

After that we’re going to hit more pediatric surgery!
