Hi everyone - I'm making a post here because I'm becoming very demoralized by comments I seem to get under almost every video these days. I often have the task of pronouncing a vast array of non-English words and names in my videos. Often these names are either pronounced incorrectly or pronounced with a strong Anglo accent - and recently people have been insinuating that I don't care about, or even have a disdain for these cultures by virtue of this, which I find incredibly unfair. I would like everyone to understand the process of these videos and the reason there is so much human error in them.

Almost every single video is researched, written, revised, clip sourced, filmed, edited, music sourced, and copy written (with the addition of a new ad every time) within the time frame of a month. Up until 2 months ago, I was doing 90% of this process myself (I now work with an editor). Often, the writing and research takes the greater part of the month because I believe the script is the most important aspect of the video, and the actual filming and editing gets pushed to the last 1.5 weeks. This means that once I sit down to record narration or film in front of the teleprompter, I'm working within an extremely crunched time frame. Youtube is also not my only project, I have other things I'm working on in the month. So when I'm recording, I'll sometimes slip up with a word or with a foreign pronunciation and genuinely not realize I have done so. Sometimes I will really struggle to accurately capture the accent of a given name or word. Sometimes I'll even pronounce an English word incorrectly that I've just never said aloud and had always read a certain way in my head (you should've heard me say "grimace" out loud for the first time a few years ago).

None of this is to create an excuse for mispronouncing these words or names. I myself have a foreign name that has been mispronounced on a daily basis, several times a day, for my entire life. I understand how upsetting it is for people not to take the time to understand something that is unfamiliar to them. But I'm asking you guys for a bit of grace with this - there is a significant amount of labour that goes into these videos so to be accused of being lazy, or outright xenophobic, because of a sincere accident is incredibly frustrating. At the moment I am financially beholden to making a monthly video - I would obviously like to make less, much much higher quality videos but I don't have an income structure that can support that at the moment. But I am often happy with the quality I am able to yield and I put a great deal of care into this, so these insinuations feel very unkind. I will try my absolute best to pronounce these words and names as accurately as possible going forward - obviously I don't WANT these mistakes to be made, but I ask for even the slightest bit of understanding that I am not malintentioned.

This is a very privileged career, but I've also considered quitting many times because having people read everything you do and say in the most uncharitable way possible is beyond exhausting. I welcome well-intentioned criticism, but when it comes in such condescending and mean spirited way, and at such a volume, it puts you at your wits end a bit.
