Eminem photographed with Comedy Central “Crank Yankers” executive/supervising producer Rob Anderson in 2004.
Originally titled Prank Puppets, Crank Yankers first premiered on June 2, 2002, on Comedy Central. It was returned by MTV2 on February 9, 2007 until March 30, to be picked up again in 2019 and is, as of 2023, still in production.
Produced and co-created by late-nights’ Jimmy Kimmel along with brother Jonathan, radios’ Adam Carolla, and TV’s Daniel Kellison, the show received various reviews for its crude slapstick humor but many worshipped its edginess.
The puppet prank call show has featured voices of comedians like Dave Chappelle to actors like Jeff Goldblum to rap groups like the Wu-Tang Clan.
Eminem first appeared on the show in puppet form in February 2004, and again twice more throughout the year.
He was reported to have been a huge fan, approaching the show itself and asking for a guest spot.
For the 2003 MTV VMAs, Eminem alongside Crank Yankers puppet Special Ed, parodied the show during his televised acceptance speech.
In 2005, Eminem with the help of puppeteers such as Ronald Binion featured the Crank Yankers characters in a music video for Eminem’s 2004 single “Ass Like That,” as well as Robert Smigel’s dog character named Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, who had prior been involved in some drama with Eminem at the 2002 MTV VMAs.
But again in 2004 Em would include the puppets, in the Shady National Convention political spoof program featuring character Special Ed.
