VIBE IN KPOP

With 2NE1’s 15th-anniversary reunion concert just a day away, the members have shared their thoughts and hinted at what fans can look forward to.

2NE1 will hold their ‘2024 2NE1 Concert Welcome Back in Seoul’ at the Olympic Hall in Seoul’s Olympic Park from October 4th to the 6th. As this marks the return of one of K-pop’s legendary girl groups, the concert is packed with their mega-hit songs, live band performances, and full support from YG Entertainment to create a high-quality show that encapsulates 2NE1’s unique identity.

The four members are more determined than ever to stand on stage together again. 2NE1 expressed, “The moment we’ve dreamed of has finally come true. We’re ready to show who we really are and get everyone moving to our original 2NE1 music.”

Q: It’s been about 10 years and 6 months since 2NE1’s last full-group concert. How does it feel?

CL: We’ve performed at Coachella and met up from time to time, but for our 15th anniversary, we wanted to plan something special together. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to turn out this big (laughs). We always said we’d do a concert together again, and now that it’s happening, I couldn’t be happier.

Sandara Park: It feels like a dream. I still can’t quite believe it. Ten years is a long time, and everything feels like a movie reel passing by. I don’t think it’ll feel real until I’m about to step on stage.

Park Bom: I’ve been waiting for this day. It feels like a dream. Right now, all I want to do is prepare well for the stage, and I’m most excited about seeing our fans again.

MINZY: We’re all kind of in shock. I don’t think it’ll hit me until I’m actually on stage. I’ve dreamt of us standing together on stage again, and seeing that dream come true is exciting and surreal.

Q: Fans have been eagerly awaiting 2NE1’s return, and all three days of the concert sold out in record time. Did you expect this?

CL: At first, I felt a bit disappointed that we couldn’t meet more fans, but the love and support we’ve received have been incredibly motivating. It’s been a long time, and there were challenges we had to overcome. We had moments of anxiety, but the fans’ response has been overwhelming. This concert is especially meaningful because it’s being held at the same venue where 2NE1 had our very first concert. It feels extra special to be starting here again.

MINZY: I spent a whole day watching fans’ reactions, and even though I’m usually not the emotional type, I ended up crying. (laughs) I’m so grateful to everyone who has waited for us and continued to love us all this time.

Q: After such a long time, how was the preparation process?

Sandara Park: We’re basically doing what we’ve always done, working with the same dancers and staff we’ve been with before. Nothing feels too different. This time, we wanted to show everyone what 2NE1 has always been great at, rather than trying to present something entirely new. Time has passed, and I think we’re even better than we were back then. (laughs)

MINZY: We’ve done these things before, but it feels new because we’re more mature now. Being together in the same space but as different people brings up a lot of emotions. It’s been a healing process for me, and I’ve gained a lot of new insights.

Q: You have a lot of hit songs. How did you approach the setlist, and can you give us a sneak peek?

CL: What we focused on for the ‘WELCOME BACK’ concert is showing the classic 2NE1. During past tours, we’d change up the choreography or rearrange the songs to show new sides of ourselves. But this time, we wanted to deliver the original 2NE1 music. We’ve packed the setlist with the essence of 2NE1’s iconic performances.

Park Bom: I wanted to perform all of our songs, but of course, we couldn’t fit them all in (laughs). Still, we’ve put together a setlist that everyone will enjoy and feel deeply connected to.

Q: What do you want fans to take away from this concert?

CL: I want to show the full scope of what 2NE1 has done musically. While we were active, we were still evolving, so our identity wasn’t fully rooted yet. But with time, I think our music has matured and become even more complete. I hope this concert will be a chance for longtime fans to reconnect with those feelings from back then, and for new fans, I hope they’ll get a sense of who 2NE1 really is.
Q: How does it feel to be preparing for this concert together again?

CL: Every moment of rehearsal has felt precious. In the past, we took these times for granted, but now they feel more special. We’re preparing with the mindset of making memories together and enjoying every bit of the process. Everything feels like a reunion.

Sandara Park: It already feels bittersweet. We’ve been rehearsing since July, and once we step onto the stage, I think I’ll miss these practice room memories even more. Of course, there will be more to come, but what used to feel normal now feels special. That’s why I’m trying to savor every moment. Plus, we’ve all matured, and I hope fans will notice how much we’ve grown on stage.

Q: You’re working with YG Entertainment again, where it all started. How’s that been?

CL: It’s been really special. This project came together so quickly, but it’s incredibly meaningful to be back with YG for our 15th anniversary. Everyone’s working passionately, and I’m grateful to be with people who know us so well.

Sandara Park: It feels like coming home. The 2NE1 members have been with YG for at least 15 years, so it’s very familiar and warm. Everyone knows our personalities well, so it’s been smooth sailing, and we’re excited about how well things are coming together.

Q: Are there any moments or performances fans shouldn’t miss?

Park Bom: I think fans will experience a range of emotions. It could be the joy of singing along or the thrill of jumping up and down with us. Whatever the feelings, I hope it’ll be a performance that moves people in many ways.

MINZY: Our live performances have always been a huge part of what fans loved about 2NE1. This time, we’ve got a lot of moments where fans can sing along with us. I’m looking forward to the ‘sing-along karaoke’ moments. (laughs) It’ll remind everyone what 2NE1’s live stages are all about.

Q: How would you sum up the ‘WELCOME BACK’ concert in one word?

MINZY: ‘Let’s party!’ 2NE1’s music always gets me moving, and I hope the audience feels the same. Our first concert was called ‘NOLZA’ (Let’s Party), so it holds even more meaning for us.

CL: ‘Stamp of approval.’ I think this concert will clearly show that 2NE1 still exists and thrives. Despite the time apart, we’ve come back strong, and I hope our reunion sets a positive example in K-pop.

Q: What are your thoughts on reaching 15 years, and what message do you have for your fans?

CL: It may be our 15th anniversary, but in my heart, it still feels like our 6th year. After all the waiting, we’re finally back together, and we’ll make sure to exceed expectations with our performance.

Sandara Park: It’s hard to believe it’s already been 15 years. It’s been 10 years since we’ve performed as a full group for Blackjack (2NE1’s fan club). I’m also a fan of 2NE1, and after all our hard work in our solo careers, we’ve finally reunited. Every day feels emotional. We owe Blackjack so much, and we’ll make it up to them with this performance. (laughs)

MINZY: Thank you for waiting. It’s amazing that you’ve continued to love and support us for 15 years. Our fans are truly precious. Having debuted at such a young age, I feel like you’ve watched me grow up. I’m going to make sure to repay you for all the love.

Park Bom: We know how long you’ve waited, and we’ve been waiting just as long. We’ll bring performances that live up to your expectations, so please continue to stay by our side. I know fans from all over will be coming, and I’m excited to show you even more during our Asia tour.

The bullying controversy between former April members Lee Na-eun and Lee Hyun-joo has resurfaced, with an individual close to April coming forward to defend Lee Na-eun.
On September 26th, Sports Kyunghyang published an interview with five people closely associated with the group April. These individuals claimed that "there was no bullying or harassment," and that the facts surrounding the incident are different from what was previously known.
April was embroiled in controversy in 2021 when the younger brother of former member Lee Hyun-joo revealed a "bullying scandal within the group." He alleged that Lee Hyun-joo left the group not because of her acting career, but due to bullying and harassment from the other members.
A company representative, referred to as Mr. A, who observed April since their trainee days, stated, “There were difficult moments for everyone, but there was no one-sided bullying,” adding, “There were no clear perpetrators or victims in the situation.”
A former manager, referred to as Mr. B, claimed that "Lee Hyun-joo’s irresponsible behavior actually hurt the group as a whole, and the other members were the ones who suffered."
Hair stylists identified as Mr. C and Mr. D also added, "It wasn't that five members bullied one, but rather one person caused difficulties for the five." They further criticized Lee Hyun-joo, saying, “If she couldn’t adapt to group life, she shouldn’t have pursued being an idol, instead of causing harm to the other members.”
Mr. C emphasized that Lee Na-eun was not the type of person who could lead bullying. Another source, Mr. E, also stated that Lee Hyun-joo was neglectful in practice and was the primary cause of discord within the team.
These individuals expressed frustration over the portrayal of the April members as perpetrators. Mr. A remarked, “This controversy feels like a witch hunt,” and voiced concern over how Lee Na-eun continues to be a target of both the public and the media.
April disbanded following the allegations that the group had collectively bullied Lee Hyun-joo, forcing her to leave. Although legal battles have continued for some time, the case has yet to reach a clear conclusion. The issue resurfaced recently when YouTuber Kwaktube shared a video on September 16th showing himself traveling in Rome with Lee Na-eun. Kwaktube has faced a wave of criticism for allegedly supporting Lee Na-eun, and with new statements emerging, attention is focused on how the case will unfold.

Former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin, who is currently in conflict with HYBE over her reinstatement, is set to address the public today (the 27th).
Min Hee-jin will be participating in the "2024 Hyundai Card Da Vinci Motel" event at 9 PM. The lecture, titled "Freestyle by Min Hee-jin, the Producer Who Breaks the K-pop Formula," will be broadcast live for approximately 100 minutes. It is expected that she will discuss her journey from her time at SM Entertainment to the creation of NewJeans. There is also speculation that she might address the ongoing conflict between HYBE and ADOR. HYBE claims to have discovered evidence during an audit that Min Hee-jin attempted to take control of ADOR, leading to her dismissal as CEO.
Following her removal, NewJeans members demanded her return, and ADOR proposed a compromise, allowing Min to take full control of NewJeans' production for the next five years, which aligns with the remaining contract period between NewJeans and ADOR. However, Min Hee-jin publicly rejected this compromise, insisting on her reinstatement as CEO.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Hyundai Card has not altered the event lineup. Min Hee-jin has been allocated 50 minutes for her talk, double the time given to other speakers. Known for her candid and bold statements, the K-pop industry is watching closely to see what she will say in her lecture today.
