Peter Gabriel is best known as a musician. He started his solo work in 1975 after leaving his old school group: Genesis. He has released eleven solo albums and written and released soundtracks for three films.

11 October, 2011 Peter and the New Blood Orchestra performed on Later with Jools Holland for the BBC, playing Solsbury Hill, San Jacinto, The Rhythm of the Heat and Red Rain. Peter was also interviewed at the piano by Jools where they showed an extract of Here Comes the Flood taken from the Kate Bush Christmas Special from 1979.

The whole New Blood project really fell off the back of Scratch My Back. Scratch My Back was conceived as a songwriters’ exchange; so you do one of my songs, and I do one of yours…. (When) we came to performing live, I realised I’m going to need more material, I’ve got this orchestra out there with me, so what else are we going to do? Let’s try some of my stuff. And then we started in earnest hammering away at some different songs. I was determined that it shouldn’t be just a sort of ‘Hits goes to the Orchestra’. So we did two things different: one was to try to choose songs that were more textural, more journey songs, more evocative, ambient pieces and less the obviously structured pop songs, and the second thing we did was, we threw away the rock band; most people when they do orchestral projects keep the rock band and add orchestra, but we took away guitar, we took away bass, we took away drum kit, and in a way that meant that we were more committed and had only to use the colours of the palette of the orchestra. - pg

Wallflower’s a song that I hadn’t really looked at for a while... I wasn’t quite sure about how we were going to do it, but I liked the simple piano approach, because when you hit the strings, after the second chorus, it’s a really emotional transition, so, the emptiness pays off... -pg, august 2011.

The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) has today announced Martyn Bennett’s final studio album ‘Grit’ as the winner of 2024’s Modern Scottish Classic Award. Grit was released on Real World Records in 2003 and Martyn also remixed Peter’s song ‘Sky Blue’.

Happy 100th Birthday President Carter. What a life he has led. It has been a pleasure and a delight to get to know him a little bit over the years and to work with him in The Elders.
