Planting & Potting On Sweet Peas

🌱 The polytunnel is starting to fill up with all sorts of stuff now including some sweet pea flowers which I sowed at the end of February. I have planted some of them around a little bamboo teepee as you see above and will be potting the rest on into larger pots for planting out in late May or early June.

🌱 As with garden peas, sweet peas need lateral as well as vertical support so, if you are growing up a teepee, you will need to run twine around it for the tendrils to latch on to.

🌱 You can also see that these plants have plenty of side shoots which is because I pinched them out 3 or 4 weeks ago. Once seedlings get to about 10cm tall with three sets of leaves, you can pinch out the growing tip of each vine. This causes more shoots to come from the base of your plant which will grow into more flower bearing vines.

🌱 The size of the flowers will be a little smaller than if you left them alone but there will be significantly more flowers overall. If you are looking to grow the biggest blooms for flower arranging or showing, leave them be.
