We’ve experienced every travel mishap in the book, and we’d hate for you to go through the same challenges we did. Here are 3 big, costly mistakes you should steer clear of:

1. Not checking last-minute visa requirement changes - Visa requirements change ALL THE TIME. Some Visas you must get in advance or they will turn you around and send you home. EXAMPLE: starting sometime next year everyone entering the EU will be required to apply for an entry document in advance online. Keep checking right up until your trip.

2. Not booking enough time between flights (especially if you’re flying through London Heathrow). If your flight is delayed, scheduling a layover that is at least a couple of hours could help you not have to reschedule the next leg of your trip. When flying through London Heathrow, you have to go back through security even for connecting flights so schedule AT LEAST 2 hours. We like to sometimes schedule 8 or 10 hours so we can see the city that we’re laying over in :)

3. Not letting your bank know you’re traveling and everywhere you’re stopping (including layovers). We have been locked out of our bank accounts when traveling and it sucks. Just give them a quick call or stop by before you leave to keep them in the loop.

Are there any other major ones we missed? Let us know in the comments! And stay tuned for part 3! 😊

We’ve made ALL the travel mistakes and we don’t want you to have to learn the hard way like us. Here are 3 of the biggest mistakes to avoid:

1. Not sending yourself a scan of your passport before you leave. If you lose your passport, having a scanned copy in your email will really speed up the process of getting help from your embassy/government.

2. Not having the information for the local embassy with you. STORY TIME. When Katie was 17 years old she flew to London for a gap semester. She ran into some trouble at customs (no fault of her own) and they decided to detain her until they could assess what they were going to do. During that time she was only allowed to make LOCAL calls. Of course, she didn’t know anybody locally. Because of this, her parents didn’t hear from her for 3 days until she landed back In the US. She was too inexperienced to know to ask to talk to the Embassy and the customs agents didn’t offer. Clearly, the embassy would have been able to help in this case, especially because she was underage. MORAL OF THE STORY: you never know when you’ll need the number for your embassy. Write it down.

3. Not packing a spare set of clothes and basic toiletries in your carry-on. Better safe than sorry… a lot of times when your bag is lost the airline can locate and return it to you, but it could take a few hours or days. We always feel super gross after traveling and want to clean up. Pack some extras in case you don’t get your bag right away!! Hopefully, you won’t need them but it’s better to have them.

Did I miss any major ones?? Tell us your story in the comments!!
