It is fitting, then, that EBM project B1980 would be the alias of GOOSE drummer Bert Libeert, who injects warm blood into techno machines in the forthcoming “Body Awareness” EP on Boysnoize Records. The industrial engine redlines from the jump on the EP’s titular opener, with detuned square leads creeping over anvil-strike snares before an ominous choir warns of the barrage to come. With “BREATHING,” a human voice seems to remind itself that it is alive backed by a pulsing bassline and metallic percussion. B1980 provides the perfect EBM soundtrack for turbulent times, and “ROLLERCOASTER” delivers exhilarating dancefloor darkness that feels overclocked beyond its 126 bpm tempo, before “OHM GUITARS” pays homage to the amphetamine psychosis of early DAF. And if your looping thoughts need an outlet, the EP ends with “COBRA POSE,” an exercise in fuse-blowing techno hypnosis. At a time when the sleek latex surface of Techno TikTok is growing in popularity, one hears the sound of B1980 smashing the black mirror throughout “BODY AWARENESS.” Images vanish as quickly as they appear, but both bodies and machines are tangible, material, present – and also, electric.
