2021 Illinois Suicide Prevention Summit

This playlist reflects presentations delivered at the 2021 Illinois Suicide Prevention Summit. It is intended to educate providers on suicide prevention and care, populations at highest risk, and reducing access to lethal means. This conference is intended to meet the educational needs of medical providers from a variety of specialties as well as those working in mental and behavioral health. OBJECTIVES • Describe why suicide prevention should be a priority for healthcare providers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic • Describe why the COVID-19 pandemic is a multi-faceted risk factor for suicide (social isolation, unemployment, financial stress, etc.) • List the key elements of effective suicide prevention in healthcare (training, screening/assessment, treatment, safety planning, transition of care, follow-up) • Describe why suicide prevention must be embedded within a sociocultural context (including age, race, ethnicity, religion, LGBTQ+, geography) and address inequities in our current healthcare system • Identify resources available to healthcare providers to implement suicide prevention in the care continuum
