There are few significant reference points in a person’s course of life. As such, I value these four compositions performed in this CD recording. Two of them-Variations on an Anatolian folksong and Koyunbaba Suite op.19 ( C. Domeniconi)-have accompanied me in concerts both in Greece and abroad, namely in some pivotal moments of mine as a guitarist, such as my participation in the most considerable guitar conference-festival, the Guitar Foundation of America. Moreover, these compositions were a source of motivation for my own attempts to compose, as well as an important part of my musicological research. The compositions Sogne Capricorne ( R. Dyens) and Desert Tale ( S. Yilmaz) have only recently been included in my repertoire. It is worth mentioning that I had the honor to premiere Desert Tale in Greece. Apart from my personal criteria , there is a more general socio-cultural background that led me to select these particular music works. Living in the era of globalization and information overload, we need to remember our roots and to determine where we are being led to. Traditional music of all kinds signals such a starting point. The compositions selected for this CD recording reflect , in its wider context, the musical tradition which prevails in the broader region of the East Mediterranean elaborated with modern composition techniques, following the tendency ( in music) of such transformations . The dialogue between Tradition and Contemporary times has been a distinctive feature of Postmodernism since the 70s.The overall work of the composers mentioned previously and, more specifically, these compositions presented in the CD belong to the aesthetics of Postmodernism featuring elements of actuality. Even more, they relate to the greek musical culture since either they use themes associated directly or indirectly to this culture- as the theme of Milise mou milise mou ( Talk to me )[ M. Chatzidakis] used in the fourth movement of the Suite Koyunbaba ,as well as the theme of the asik song Uzun ince bir yoldayim ( I am in a long and narrow street) used in the work Variations on an Anatolian folksong- or have been composed in ancient greek modes combined with rhythms of the greek traditional music, pointing out this way a strong connection in the fields of acoustics and aesthetics. Concluding ,let us emphasize that the remembrance of Tradition is a current issue of paramount importance for the aforementioned reasons. Enjoy the performance and…………Travelling goes on!
