October 2020 and the buildings still haven't been fixed. Very frustrating. but here's the story so far
In this short series of films, we see the struggle of the residents of the prestigious NV Buildings in Salford Quays to deal with, and resolve, the safety issues arising from unsafe external cladding.
These three sixteen storey buildings are regarded as some of the most iconic buildings in the north of England, and which are a much-loved part of the Salford Quays skyline. Built in 2005/6 by property developers Countryside PLC, they have been an aspirational location to buy or rent property for the entirety of their existence. Many first-time buyers and families have settled here, attracted by the quayside location, and proximity to the buzz and fun of nearby Media City. But in the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy, residents have been dismayed to learn their homes are housed in buildings that do not meet current fire regulations, or, crucially, the fire regulations that existed at the time of the development’s construction.
Like many others, living in both social and private housing, NV residents, represented by their board, have acted swiftly to ensure that the buildings are safe, consulting with the Fire Department and other safety experts. There is a twenty-four hour ‘waking watch’ in place to ensure the blocks are safe. But there is also a potentially massive bill to pay for the correcting faults identified in the cladding of NV buildings.
In the first clip, David James of LTBM gives us an overview of the story so far. The second piece features Salford MP Rebecca Long - Bailey at a meeting with those concerned. She eloquently raises the question - who is responsible for the cost of correcting the flaws in the original design. Should this be the families living in NV now, who’ve been through all the usual surveys and conveyancing before they bought their homes? The third film gives an insight into the shocking reality of the actual cladding used. In the fourth film, Dave asks the scary question - what happens if one of these buildings is on fire, and sixteen floors of render lands on the busy tramline that serves Media City.
The fifth film of the playlist features NV residents themeselves. They ask the pertinent question - who is morally responsible for the unsafe construction of these buildings?
The sixth film of the playlist shows some of the life-changing impacts this issue has had on the lives of those who call NV Buildings home. They are united in their plea to Countryside Properities PLC - do the right thing, and take responsibility for your actions. Make NV Buildings safe.
