Instructions: bit.ly/BasecampGiveaway In this series of Travel Basecamp, It’s the first time that we're hitting an european destination for our Videos travel-guide and we picked Algarve in Portugal for many reasons that you will understand by watching this series. Sit back and enjoy our adventures in this series where we discover the Benagil caves with Stand-up paddle boards, learn to harvest Goose Barnacles in Lagos, Learn to fly paragliders in the sky of Faro and taste some of the best Portuguese cuisine. We invite you to discover Algarve in Portugal through the eyes of "Basecampers" Rodrigo Basurto Garcia, Troy Peckham and Emily Silver. EPISODE-1 - We kick off our Travel Basecamp Algarve season with a day of stand up paddle boarding at Praia da Marinha, the most beautiful beach in Europe and arguably the most beautiful beach in the world (seriously). Gliding over emerald waters, our guide Nick Robinson from www.algarvesup.com/ brings us to Benagil Cave, a massive tunnel found in Algarve's coastal cliffs. The legendary cave was formed by centuries of erosion caused by the constant waves of the Atlantic ocean and is now so huge it literally takes your breath away once you're inside. Getting yourself on a stand up paddle tour along this coast is one of dozens of things to do in the Algarve region. It was on our bucket list and should be on yours, too. EPISODE-2 - Add barnacles to your list of exotic food to try in Algarve, Portugal! These barnacles are truly wild and only grow in a few remote places, such as Lagos in the Algarve. Harvesting can be a hazardous business and a permit is needed from the Portuguese authorities. Harvesting for this delicacy is not a touristic option, due to the dangerous area they grow in, and the trouble it takes to collect them - hence the hefty price. But you can taste this widely consumed, yet expensive delicacy in many restaurants in Portugal and Spain. As Charlie Skelton, journalist for The Guardian says about the smell of goose barnacles cooking: ‘’It hits your nose like a tsunami, that incredible reek of the sea – strong as Poseidon's armpit, but heavenly, like a mermaid's burp.’’ For Travel Basecamp, it wasn’t an option! We needed to go head first into this wild and dangerous adventure of collecting goose barnacles. We were referred to a surf photographer João Bracourt AKA ‘’Brek’’ (joaobracourt.wordpress.com/). Brek was keen on the idea of being our host and accepted to bring us to his secret spot. Our mind was blown by the beauty of the landscape and our tastebuds were in paradise. We were blessed! EPISODE-3 Nothing is more spectacular than flying high up in the sky and admire the view of the beautiful Algarve region. We traveled to Albufeira to meet up with José Rosado & Ivo Duarte from the Algarve Paragliding Association. Rodrigo got in touch with them and surprised Troy, his aim was to set him up to face his fear of heights. Check our rock climbing episode in Huatulco, Mexico where Troy had to abandon the climb half way to the summit: youtube.com/watch?v=YhBxfrYwy2g This adrenaline pumped activity, especially for Troy, ended up to be one of the most contemplative for us! A must for any thrill seeker searching for a deep personal experience! Each one of us had a moment whilst flying the glider, where we felt happy and lucky to be right there, up in the air, at that very moment! EPISODE-4 We finish off our adventure in Algarve by cooking the region’s staple dish in the town of Faro! Although cataplana is the name of the copper cookware famous in the Algarve region, it also lends its name to the dish. We wish to thank the staff at Tertulia Algarvia, and especially chef Margarida Vargues for taking the time to teach us this delicious dish. We highly recommend you pay them a visit if you are in Faro. Alternatively, you can also try this dish at home, thanks to their generosity for passing on the recipe for our viewers! Check our blog for the recipe of the cataplana dish that we cooked in that episode. We also stopped by some local hot spots in Faro such as Columbus bar to taste a delicious smoky porto wine and also at Se7e Pedras wine bar for a glass of the famously crisp portuguese white wine called Vinho verde.
