Arthur Lyons @ Home In Durham NC June & May 1976 Recorded By Kip Lornell

Arthur Chester Lyons, in the 1930s was possibly one of the best blues and ragtime guitarists and singers in Durham NC during its blues hayday playing with Rev Gary Davis and Blind Boy Fuller in the street from time to time but never recorded during that time... he was discovered in the 1970s as a 60 plus year old man that had both his legs amputated in 1974 and had just got over a broken neck as well... and had been battling his health the last 15 to 20 years of his life, he wasnt playing guitar much due to his lacking health and age and motivation but these recordings show just some of the chops he still had and could still play pretty well. when he spoke in the interviews with kip it was almost in a whisper and he sounded weak and tired but when he picked up the guitar you hear someone with a great laid back jazzy, scatty, blues voice and a charm and strong feeling of the blues, ragtime, and swing jazz from his youth and you can only imagine how how good he was 4 decades before... to hear someone play like this in 1976 was hard to find, just a bye gone era and style. thought this needed to be shared, enjoy if you want to hear arthur play with john dee check out this link here dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/sfc/id/52…
