@vi5129

i think one of the biggest shifts in social media culture was when instagram changed their algorithm from being chronological to recommended. it was all downhill from there. also, i feel like pinterest is the only platform where i have never left with negative emotions? i should really use it more, but i don't, because it is not as addictive. how ironic.

@RitualCat

Social media are not social anymore. They just deepens the loneliness we feel

I already submitted but forgot to mention discord!! Discord servers are great for communities that don’t want to have to rely on an algorithm

Since it’s on topic, I wanted to mention to anyone reading this that Meta has stopped fact checking and clearly is attempting to align their platforms with certain agendas!! Please be aware with what you say in their messaging systems specifically!! as we all know Meta has a dubious history with data but the current climate makes it so important to carefully protect anything you share/say on their platforms!! 💙

Forgot to say this in the open end at the end - tbh I feel like nowadays social media brings more pain than joy overall BUT we’re trapped into keeping it because now it’s so necessary for modern life. I.e., keeping up with culture, information, trends, and other people. Even groups/communities - like knowing when and where there will be marches, protests, etc. So as much as I’d love to quit it all, I feel like I literally can’t because then I become too disengaged with society. 😭

The only real social media I regularly use nowadays (except youtube, which is borderline depending on how you use it imo) is Tumblr. The user base is basically identical to the people using it in 2015, but they’re all older and wiser now. There aren’t a ton of younger people (like minors) because it doesn’t get a lot of new users. I love how minimal the ads are and how bad the algorithm is (so I don’t stay on that long). If anyone shitty pops up, I can block them and I’ll never see them again. You can say all the “bad words” other platforms censor or suppress. World news is announced through Supernatural memes. It’s not perfect by any means, but it’s way better than most of the other options imo

@Dixavd

I appreciate how the age ranges don't overlap. So many surveys mess that up.

Took the survey! I loved social media when it was just YouTube for videos and everything else for keeping up with friends. Now it’s all about advertising everywhere you can and it’s given me anxiety for real! Like if I post something on YT I feel like I have to post it everywhere else as well. Can’t wait to see what your video is about!

Social media currently feels like an elaborate mlm where it used to be a place to actually be social and connect. I remember making friends with niche interests on tumblr and today 8 different companies tried to sell me weight loss medication.

♥️ I love that you asked "which apps / platforms do you find joy in these days?" instead "on which apps are you active". Never thought of asking me this question consciously.

As a social studies nerd im always so jealous of the amount of people you can reach, love participating in these!

Thanks for posting this on YouTube! I’m always sad that I can’t participate in your surveys because I don’t have social media. If anyone is considering a boycott I’ve been off Instagram, TT & Facebook for 3 years now and my life and mental health are so much better for it 😌

I can’t stop thinking about this survey. Your thumbnail fits so well. Like I stopped getting joy so I unsubbed from so many channels on YouTube, but YouTube has like NO options to sort YouTube subbed videos on laptop. Like on my phone I can sort by watched and I watched, and I just wish that feature was on desktop

The TT censorship is so aggravating, it would’ve been my favorite app a week ago lol

So excited for this video Tiffany!! I’ve been subscribed to your channel for like 4-5 years now and I can listen to you talk about anything! But I’m super excited about this topic because I recently deactivated Facebook and Instagram (which were the only social media accounts I had) and it’s been about two weeks and my mind hasn’t felt this clear in years! To help you with your research, check out Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport and Reclaiming Conversation by Sherry Turkle. I hope you expand this topic into a series and cover topics such as the pipelines that social media creates through trends and algorithms and how those pipelines can lead to dangerous online narratives and subcommunities.

Filled out! Feels super relevant to me as I’ve been lamenting on being able to find content I enjoy on YouTube, because the recommended seems to be pushing too much current news that just leaves me emotionally and mentally drained 😭 Also started having symptoms of carpal tunnel, so I need to reduce phone usage

I really hope YouTube stays the same and doesn't force change! When they implement YTShort I was already overwhelmed by the addictiveness to endless scroll and waste time. This fomo and endless scrolling was the main reason I stopped using fb and IG, but I really hope they won't change more. All this forced changes give me bad anxiety, because nothing feels save anymore, everything can be taken away in an instant, all memories and all the collected or saved or uploaded stuff can just disappear and these are all kind of memories
