Following on from my video today about my build with the 3-axis GM3 gimbal from Walksnail I wondered if others shared my opinion that they should have also released a simple PAN only gimbal and a PAN/TILT gimbal as the GM1 and GM2 if these are gimbals are aimed at head tracking as they stated on the website - "Based on pilots feedback and implement head tracking function of goggles"....

@ddegn

I recently purchased a C-20T 3 axis gimbal. It uses DJI's O3. If the gimbal is controlled via servo channels, it will only pan and tilt. I was very surprised to find roll was also active with the included head tracker. As I tilt my head side to side, the camera also rolls. When not using the head tracker, the roll is only used to stabilize the camera. As others have mentioned, I think gimbals are generally used for stabilization. I think head tracking is an after thought for most of these gimbals.

Cost/benefit for the last axis isn't worth the additional bulk and damage risk.

Maybe a bit out of the box (best part is no part) can you have your'e arduino nano head tracker send the pwm signal over a wireless signal to your radio? Or a small express lrs transmitter where you can send your pan tilt directly to your receiver (i thinks 1 receiver on the plane with 2 transmitters with the same binding phrase... or can it be much simpler ... without cable and no compomises. Looks like fun to me. Habe a nice day and thanks to make my hobby innovatave and fun again

I agree that pan would have been a better choice, but I can see exactly why they did it this way. It’s the easiest. They just designed the GM3, then progressively removed axes to get to the GM1. Making the GM1 pan only and the GM2 pan/tilt would have meant that they would have had to design three completely different versions of hardware from the camera mount all the way to the soft mount. As it is, the GM2 is a GM3 with the pan motor removed, and the GM1 is a GM3 with the pan and roll motors removed. The only part they had to change was the plastic piece that connects to the soft mounts. Pretty standard Walksnail/Caddx choice of whatever is most expedient for them (like the way the Moonlight is a regular VTX with a buddy board stuck on, hence the need to connect the two with a wire for updating).

@tmc-fpv

For simple pan and tilt I'm gonna continue to use a pair of £3 servos.

The problem is, caddx didn't manufacture these gimbals. Hardware is bought, but Software is from caddx. So they are not able to change anything. The original manufacture intended to have small gimbals for quad drones. Only caddx decided to advertise them for car and plane. But I agree, GM2 having pan instead of roll would be a better choice for planes. For quad drones it is perfect as it is... For GM1 it is dicussable. Do you need pan with a 160° FOV camera?? Maybe?!

Caddx did not make these gimbals. They are OEM designs that Caddx rebranded from a company called xf robot. Their real names are the C-20T, C-20D, and C-20S. There is a version of the Haohan Firefly that comes with the C-20T.

@GeorgeHawkins

But haven't they done exactly that? Or am I confused? Isn't the GM3 just part of the Caddx range that also includes the GM1 and GM2? At least that's what I see at the Caddx site.

@SnowbirdSteeze

I sell gimbals to the majority of drone OEMs. No one outside of enterprise customers need 3 axis

@HansMilling

Isn't that just a matter of configuration?

Hello Lee, have you found on their website a link to download GimbalConfig.exe as it is written in their user manual? Btw thanks for the video, can't wait to see it in action !
