Since I posted my latest reel, I found out bird boxes are called many different things depending on the region you live in. Funny how that is. Here in Tennessee they are usually referred to as “bird boxes”.
The way I made these boxes is definitely not standard. I chose the @lpbuildingsolutions smartside pre-finished fascia since I needed to “plow” or dado a groove to accept my Chamclad soffit that I will be using. This simply gives me a clean transition between the two different types of materials without an additional pc of trim. I used a 5/8” straight cut bit to make the dado.
It is really hard to line up the same thickness material and make it look worth a damn. So, I opted to plane my 1x12 down about 1/4”. This gave me a shadow line that really sets it off! Ties into the 1x2 that I ran up each gable
I temporarily screwed a 1x12 pc of stock under the fascia. This way I can mark a level and plumb line. Then I scribed the outline of the framing for reference. My soffit is right at 3/8” thick. I cut my dado a little wider to give myself some wiggle room if needed. It’s approximately 3/8” deep. I used the track saw to give myself a super clean edge to router to & then made the laser straight cuts.
I did sand down the smartside as best as possible to give it a smooth finish. Any surface that you cut on, you are supposed to paint and seal up those edges so I used three coats of SW Emerald urethane. Since it’s all blacked out you can’t see the wood grains unless you get out a 9000 lumen spotlight and a ladder and put your nose up to it 😆 A little OSI in between the butt joint to keep moisture out and a few galvalized hand drive 5 penny nails. Touch up the nail heads and we are good to go! A smooth ass bird box!
