Growing up in the Midwest I always found autumn kind of a bittersweet season. A few weeks of gorgeous color and great weather seemed poor compensation for the brutal winter on the way! In the northwest though, those first autumn misty rainy days are the beginning of an awakening after the summer drought. Ferns unfold in the trees, the moss greens up, and it’s the perfect time to get new things established in the garden. And thanks to our large Chinese community, moon cakes! 🥰

Were you in Vietnam in the spring? Did you see the Bombax Ceiba trees? You can’t miss them, covered in red flowers.

It’s Mid-Autumn Festival today. 🌕🥮 It’s the 2nd most important holiday of the year with Lunar New Year being the 1st. Equivalent to Thanksgiving — love ones gather for dinner and mooncakes while gazing at the moon. One of the traditional fillings in the cake is Lotus paste with a preserved whole egg yolk in the center representing the moon. The harvesting of crops is the 2nd reason why this day is celebrated. Usually, after this day fall season comes very close. I’m saddened by the days getting shorter and nights longer. I guess a break from the heat isn’t so bad…as you can see in the 2nd photo. 😆 I was sweating under the Áo dài (Vietnamese dress) at 8AM.
