The year 1816 was so cold it is remembered as "The Year Without a Summer". While mysterious, it is thought to have been caused by a massive volcano eruption in Indonesia. Such volcanic winters are rare but always possible. If a large enough volcano goes off, acidic clouds can shield the earth from sunlight. So another year without summer could occur at any time.
