Is Kannada mandatory in Karnataka Schools?

An opinion by our Chairman Mr. Chaitanya

Yes, Kannada is a compulsory subject in all schools in Karnataka, including both public and private schools. The state government has made it mandatory for all schools to teach Kannada as a subject, regardless of their syllabus. The Karnataka government has enacted three laws that mandate the teaching of Kannada as a compulsory subject from Class I to X in all schools. These laws are:

Kannada Language Learning Act (2015)
Kannada Language Learning Rules (2017)
Karnataka Educational Institutions (Issue of No Objection Certificate and Control) Rules (2022)

Now, there is a new mandate that, Kannada will be 1st or 2nd language, but not 3rd, for class VIII from 2024-25 academic year in Karnataka which is under Judiciary.
