Back in 2013, I spent three months traveling around Turkey. I was doing research for my PhD thesis, and visited dozens of ancient sites (by my best estimate, about 75), taking pictures and measurements. It was hot, exhausting, and wonderful.

Around the middle of my trip, I spent a few days with the Austrian excavation team at Ephesus. The working day started at 6 AM, when the archaeologists headed to their trenches to avoid the heat. I went with them, and was able to spend hours wandering the site before it opened to the public. I've attached a few of the pictures I took then.

I've returned to Ephesus a few times since (I wrote a chapter of my thesis on the site), but the magic of those first summer mornings has never completely disappeared. It's part of why I'm thrilled to be returning to Ephesus in October as the leader of a tour exploring Turkey's fascinating historical heritage.

Any plans to visit Miletus in Turkey?! This seems like a hugely underrated site, and I would love to see a video on this with TIS level detail and analysis!

It is also worth mentioning that many artifacts from Ephesus were excavated and transported to Austria in 1903 (with permission from the sultan at the time). Now displayed in museum in Vienna. But even without them, Ephesus still a lot to see and is an inspiring ancient city.

What were they working on in Ephesus? I’ve been reading papers on the gladiator cemetery there and find the site very interesting. I’m on a similar tour right now in the Balkans, staying in Ohrid cirrently

I’ve been there. Ephesus and Pamukale. We’ve been even taken a dip in the ancient Roman pool. It was amazing 😁

I was in Epheses during a trip to Turkey in 2011. I also got a chance to see the Temple of Artemis, or what is left, as well as the supposed burial of St John the apostle

How often would you say you think about the Roman Empire?

How would the ancient Greeks feel about us leaving their structures in ruin? If they could speak to us, wouldn't they implore us restore the grandeur of their temples and libraries?

Did you know you could stay as late as 8 pm nowadays? I was there just three days ago! It was my third time there and it has never failed to amaze me. Walking down the main street at sunset was unforgettable. I’m sure you must have been but I cannot recommend the sites in Bergama (Pergamon) enough to anyone interested. We spent three days there, wish I could have stayed more. I’ve also always wanted to visit Knidos but it’s as remote as it gets.
