Depends on the context, but in any serious interview the interviewer clearly trying to make fun of the interviewee and not letting them speak.

A lot of people are saying no challenging question. I think the opposite is just as bad, and makes it feel more like a trial than an interview. I think there’s a middle ground. It should feel like the interviewer is genuinely interested in hearing what the interviewee thinks, rather than just looking for clips that can later be posted on Twitter.

A clear agenda. Not challenging your guest even as a devils advocate

No challenging questions whatsoever. Just a hugfest with whoever comes on.

When something is clearly an opinion, but the interviewer keeps trying to explain to the interviewee that opinion as if it were fact.

This briefly started a conversation between me and my brother, and what we think is that a GOOD interview is essentially where the interviewer lets the host talk and keeps them talking. I don’t personally watch Joe Rogan, but my brother says that the reason he thinks he’s so good is because he’s an expert at drawing his interviewee’s opinions out and keeping them talking. So I guess a bad interview would be the opposite?

When the interviewer lacks conversational skills so it becomes awkward or uncomfortable. Just look at Conan O’Brien, Cris Ferguson, or Jon Stewart. They are all excellent conversationalists and have really great conversations with their guests.

- The interviewer only giving prompts for prepared anectdotes (i.e. bad late night interviews) - The interviewee not answering questions, but just repeating prepared statements/talking points (i.e. bad politician interviews) The best interviews require a lot of prepartation to get to a point where the interviewee goes "Wow, no-one ever asked me that!" and is then genuinely thrilled to talked about something the viewers didn't expect.

Lex Fridman. Man just lets people ramble, never pushing back, even lightly, or probing their beliefs with actual meaning. Almost as if the point of the broadcast is to get famous people on to draw attention to his channel

I mean, this is a fairly broad issue, but Audience Capture is becoming more and more prevalent and making interview-style podcasts and shows not as interesting as before. I can think of quite a few personalities who started off with a generalised approach and would have had individuals of many different political leanings on, but realized it was more profitable to cater to one side over another and so restructured accordingly.

The relevancy of the questions, if you’re only asking about the upcoming project then the interview will become dated by the time of release

A meaningfully engaged interviewer who digs deeper when and answer bring up an interesting thread to follow instead of just moving on to the next question

- Poor research beforehand by the interviewer - Asking questions we already know the answer to - Self-centered interviewers (re: their personal socio-political agenda) - Bland / unimportant / over-saturated areas of discussion - Quality of the person being interviewed. Does anyone really care what (insert lame celebrity name here) thinks?

When it feels like the interviewer wants a certain narrative, so they ask super “guided” questions.

When it's clear the interviewer hasn't done any significant research into the person they are interviewing, or into the topic they are interviewing the person about.
