Ren’s song is beautifully devastating, it breaks my heart every time. He also has “For Joe”, a raw and vulnerable live performance incorporating elements of “Suic*de” and parts of the earlier “Freckled Angels” along with references to “Dominoes” (other powerful pieces worth a check). His instrumental piece “Mackay” is definitely worth a listen - this shows that you don’t necessarily need lyrics to pile on the emotions (especially once you read into the story behind the piece). For something that’s not Ren, “The Same Deep Water As You” by The Cure completely tears me to shreds every time I listen to it (it has its own meaning to me and triggers me hard).

'Der Weg' was not written with the intention to make you sad or let you cry. It's written because he wanted to tell the world how intensely he loved his wife and how incredible real, honest and beautiful his relation was with her. He uses short effective sentences with beautiful words in a delicate way that makes you really understand the value of love. This song is a testament to the bitter-sweetness of life itself.

This song spoke to me so much. I have been where he is, and like Ren, I have come out the other side. I also find it kinda ridiculous and pathetic that this song has been banned on a few platforms for the use of the suicide. Not saying the word suicide has never stopped someone determined end their life. Speaking honestly about a difficult subject, now that might actually help someone. Good on Ren for being wise enough to see that and brave enough to create something real and raw. 💜❤️‍🔥

„Der Weg“ is highly emotionaland sad. But for me it is one of the best love declarations to a missing loved one: German singer / songwriter / Rock-Pop-musician Herbert Grönemeyer lost his wife and his brother in 1998 both within 4 days of cancer, in the same exact week. After that he vanished and didn’t (couldn’t) make music for a long time. After 4 years he came back with his Album "Mensch". The title song "Mensch" is dedicated to his deceased wife and his deceased brother. Whereas the „song Der Weg" (The Path) is especially dedicated to his wife. Singing "Der Weg" live is still challenging for him, as it awakes strong emotions in him every time. At the very beginning of this video you can see and hear him push out air, before starting with the song. Herbie, as he is called by his fans, is one of the most successful German musicians. The album "Mensch" sold millions of copies and is stll to this day the best selling german album of all time. This is a live rendition from 2003 with 60.000 people in a stadium and it has English subtitles. This song still gets me every time I hear it and this live rendition is incredibly good and emotional. https://youtu.be/_9CnnYhFQHY?si=hSEYh3KedI0cJZ1r

I voted Yebba "My Mind" But I'm going to make a kinda write-in request too. You've heard so little of The Warning. All I see is "Choke". And to get the full effect I'd recommend a few more rock songs just to get to know the sisters a bit better first. But if you want a good cry, you go to Pau at the piano, backed by a small orchestra, singing the back-to-back ballads "Black Holes" and "Breathe" (timestamp 33:07 - 42:17 from the Pepsi Center concert). Yes, the songs are somber, but its the performance that will get you!!!

Possibly the most emotional song and performance I've seen is ONE OK ROCK "Nobody's Home" live at Yokohama arena 2012. Taka wrote that song for his parents. He had a major falling out with his parents. He caused them all sorts of trouble and even controversies, his parents are both famous singers. He wanted to pursue music, while they were against it because they knew how hard it is to succeed. He decided to drop out of high school his freshman year. After that and a couple other things, he decided to run away from home and his parents disowned him. It took a while but they did patch things up. He tells everything he wanted to say to his parents in the song and to apologize for everything. The 2012 performance is so emotional because it was the first time his parents went to a concert.

Ren's song will wreck you. It's raw and completely honest.

@Dalton325

If you do Ren, it is self contained, but basically has a sequel with “For Joe” that you should do together, or in a video right after.

Someone already suggested "Vincent" by Don McLean. I'll also add "Lamentation" by Tom Chapin about the loss of his brothers, "Terry's Song" by Bruce Springsteen, and "Vanilla Twilight" by Owl City about how you spend your first night alone after the funeral.

Most people have never heard of YEBBA or the story behind My Mind. In short, she's one of the greatest singer-songwriters of late and if you haven't heard her body of work, you're missing out.

Couldn't vote for two but James Blunt and Ren deserve a deep dive.

...as it has been a few years.... "My Mind" may not get the votes it once would have.... but this video offers a true MASTER CLASS in vocal control and performance... So if not this time, maybe as a "personal choice" in the near future...You will be justly rewarded!!!

You really need to give yourself a treat and react to Richie Kotzen “Remember” live in Japan 2015. Crazy good vocals, crazy good guitar player, crazy good songwriter. Why he doesn’t get more attention is way beyond me.

Daddy by KORN is so powerful and heartbreaking that you begin to feel as if you're the victim and will leave you emotionally drained.

I don't know if you've heard it before, but "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride is a real tear-jerker.

@OyGestalt

Since you've recently touched on RAYE, you should really add her "Ice Cream Man." to the list. The music video is heart-wrenching, while the live version from Royal Albert Hall will gut you. If you're lucky to be able to see the Beeb video, do so following the MV (should you choose to react) - sadly, it's restricted, so those of us outside BBC's reach cannot see it, unless they purchase the DVD. Back in my day, the saddest songs that I can remember are Leonard Cohen's "So Long, Marianne", Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" and, of course, The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home".
