I love Mike from Strong Towns. I would literally love to see him become the Secretary of Transportation!

The expectations on children's independence in the US and Germany are so polar opposites… I Germany you are seen as a bad parent, if you drive your kids to school (20% do it anyway, which is seen as a problem across all political parties. Even though some claim other reasons than traffic safety). In the US (and Canada) the police might be after you, if you don't…

Thanks for the link. It made me think of how some of my friends back in USA say their grandkids are made to feel suspicious of others instead of learning how to make friends, regardless of having a third place or not. The UK appointed someone to take on the issue of loneliness about a decade ago. I haven't checked on how that might have helped their society.

When cities are designed for cars, such as in the US where the entrance to the groceries store from the sidewalk is 100m away, or where zoning laws forbid mixed residential and retail, people don’t come across others because they are inside cars.

Meh, i live in the Valhalla of urbanism the Netherlands and these issues persist here aswel. The real issue is social media and the lack of actual connections. The phone zombie pandemic if you will. It fundamentally destroyed certain traditions and behaviors that wont be regained in our lifetime. I suspect most people have their dopamine receptors burned out but i am no scientist.

Using the narrative of "epidemic" removes some of the self determination that people have. The same is an issue when people talk about homelessness and suicide.

Type Ashton
The loneliness epidemic that many are experiencing is exacerbated by the way communities are built, experts say. But design fixes could be close at hand.
Check out this awesome video by Mike at @strongtowns and you might just see a familiar face 😉
