In creating the YIR 2020 video, and particularly in going through the 100+ hours of footage to collect clips, I had a great old guy moment where my middle (scrolling) finger had actually gotten a little sore from tons upon tons upon tons of clicky scrolling. I ended up switching over to smooth scroll as a result, and since then I've been liking it a lot. I still use clicky for games, but editing/browsing/etc is now smooth.

When not gaming, what method do you prefer? For me it's turned into smooth after decades of clicky.

Perfectly balanced. As all things should be

Clicky when doing precise stuff and smooth when I go through tens of thousands lines of code

I don't know if 54 qualifies as 'certified old guy', but I've always used smooth scrolling even for games and powerpoint-engineering. I have the beginnings of RSI in both hands so anything that's less repetitive, less ratchety, and has more dynamic range keeps the old joints flexing.

Luckily my mouse can switch between the two, so I use clicky for games, and smooth for everything else.

If it's something where precision is not immediately required, smooth is the way to go.

Depends. AutoCAD, clicky please. Spreadsheets, smooth. Logitech mouse with both

I like clicky-scroll, but I did not realize until recently how much difference the mouse makes. I've got a Logitech G403 and the wheel is GREAT - it has "clicks" but they're smooth enough, and the wheel has a rubberized surface that provides good traction. I tried out a Logitech G502 and the wheel was awful - the clicks were loud and the smooth metal wheel necessitated pushing harder than I liked to get it to spin.

I would prefer clicky scrolling, bit I have never really tried smooth scroll. But what I really love is a mouse with DPI- and DPI+ buttons, that is possible to rebind. So, if to rebind them to Ctrl+End and Ctrl+Home, it would be extremely convenient to jump to the top or the bottom of the page. Unfortunately, not all mouses allow to rebind DPI buttons.

My mouse (Logitech G903, I think) can toggle between clicky & free-wheeling. I love that feature, & I switch as needed.

Why not both? G502 gang rise up!

I prefer clicky by default, but a button (logitech g502) to switch to smooth is very important.

Where is the “I have a poor people’s mouse and can’t choose between the two” option?

@rollieize

I'm too old to know the difference, back in my day I would have balls in my mouse !

Wow, can't believe I'm here first. 29 seconds since posted it said. Def. Smooth scrolling. Depending on the game I'll use smooth ingame too.
