Vintage Ads, Idents and Trailers

The TV and TV advertising landscape was very different in the late 80's early 90's to that of today. All national advertising was funneled through just two channels, ITV and Channel 4, and as such was expensive, had a huge reach and was highly influential.

The main TV channels could attract large audiences. ITV was pulling in up to 26 million viewers (March 1989) for its flagship soap , Coronation Street. As a result of the consumer boom, large companies competed for airtime in order to sell to widest audiences possible through the use of clever and sometimes lavish commercials.

Here are a selection of TV advertisements, idents and trailers from a period between 1987-91 just prior to the Internet and Digital revolutions. They provide as a surprisingly vivid reminder and insight of life at the time.

I hope you’ll find this channel an interesting historical encapsulation of the social aspirations in the late 80’s early 90’s that the influences that helped shape a nation.
