Whuppity Scoorie - An annual event of uncertain origin still staged on 1 March in Lanark, in which children run for 3 counterclockwise laps round a church & then scramble for coins.
Originally participants were penitents who were whipped round the church, and afterwards 'Scoored' (washed / scoured) in the River Clyde.
