Founded in 2003 by four students majoring in Guitar from the University of the Philippines College of Music, the group called itself the Abelardo Guitar Quartet in reverence to the Abelardo Hall named after the late National Artist for Music Nicanor Abelardo where they often stayed and rehearsed to hone their classical guitar artistry. The group has given concerts on and off campus as well as performances at Paco Park. The repertoires of the quartet cover many periods and musical styles from the Renaissance to the 20th Century and comprises not only original works for four guitars but also the quartets own transcription of pieces, originally written for other instruments. All members of the Quartet are senior members and principal players of the University of the Philippines Guitar orchestra.
