Hi, I'm Charlie White. I've been doing DIY for as long as I can remember. I'm on a personal quest to show anyone and everyone, that DIY really is Do-able! I'm self taught and now I'm here to teach you!

Note to self, probably not the best idea to put out a YouTube video on paintng exterior woodwork (front door) in October or for that matter doing a spot of said painting. Oh well, video coming out Friday on what I think is one of the best paint systems I've ever used.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. What was I thinking? This is a classic case of being so involved in a job, and rushing to get it in use, I took my eye off the ball at the last minute with catastrophic consequences. We wanted our siberian larch to silver gracefully, but it looked SO like ordinary pine I was concerned to weather proof it. I already had a tin of Barrettine preserver and Fiddes high build oil so I thought, what the hell, I'll use those. The irony is I hate products that sit on the surface (you'll hear me often ranting about wood stains) but the clue was in the title "high build". They call it an oil but it's not. It's a polyurethane varnish that sits on the surface. So what little sun we had this useless summer set to work destroying the protective layer and possibly the larch beneath thought "I don't need this s+&t" and burst through it like the Incredible Hulk when he was a bit cross. It'll all have to be stripped off in the spring and I've hopefully roped in my good friend ‪@RagnBoneBrown‬ to help. The good news is those morticed joints are all looking good so far. #timbertreatment #barrettine #fiddes #exterioroil #larch #outdoorfurniture

Annnndd, we're done. The external tap thermostatic mixer valve is in. It took a lot longer than it should have with a bit of head scratching, general faffing and having to wait for Y strainers I didn't realise I needed but I'm pleased with the result and in the nick of time (I had to sponge DIY Dog down from a bucket in the rain yesterday). #dogshower #mixertap #thermostatic #pegler

Dog shower 2.0 is nearly done. The old one was ripped out along with the old kitchen so I've listened to all the criticism (mostly on Instagram and Facebook) and come back with what I hope will be the ultimate outdoor thermostatic mixing valve shower - and not a moment too soon because it doesn't seem to stop raining right now and DIY Dog doesn't like being houses down with cold water 😉. #dog #outdoor #shower

It's taken longer than I had hoped to get the skirtings and architraves in (with a lot of funky scribing to do), interspersed with a very thought-provoking trip up to the National Memorial Arboretum with the old Dad on Wednesday. Pleased with the result though, and the adhesive foam was interesting to use - if not without its flaws! Now got to try and get a video done from scratch ideally by tomorrow evening. Wish me luck. #skirtings #architraves #baseboards #adhesivefoam #diy

Back to the kitchen this week and a spot of carpentry. I've decided to try our a few new techniques for fixing this stuff. Hopefully there'll be a video this weekend. #skirting #architrave #diy

So nearly 5 years after constructing the decking at the bottom of the garden, I thought I'd give it it's annual refurb. I've concluded a few things from my experiences with this stuff, like i) if you go for soft wood (and hardwood for that matter) you've got to be prepared to clean and re-oil every 6-12 months because ii) the oils are all pretty rubbish but iii) if you're prepared to do this on the back of installing a well treated sub structure, you should get many years use out of your deck. I thought I'd do a video update - d'you think it would be useful? And if you have composite it would be great to hear from you - what have you learnt from it - has yours met expectation? Which one would you recommend? How d'you strike a decent balance between quality and affordability. Because we were talking about decking on the Discord forum the other day and I kind of concluded that composite is the way to go if you can justify the cost. Look forward to your thoughts on this 👊🙂 #decking #oil #weatherproofing

The outdoor furniture video is done and going live tomorrow evening at 5pm on the channel. Hope you like it! I'm pretty pleased with how it's come together but there will as usual be a healthy dose of mistakes and things I could have done better (like the oil treatment) 😉 #outdoor #furniture #modular #siberian #larch #DIY

Thank you all for your comments yesterday. The quote was £4560 Inc VAT and labour and materials, fully meshed, 1.5mm thin coat silicone system. What I'm reading is that we'd all like jobs like this to come in at around £3k, but a lot of you wouldn't be surprised if the figure was more like £4-5k and it becomes a financial disaster if its done badly. I was tempted to have a go myself - I've recently tiled the kitchen floor where most people said I was crazy to take it on. But I think this job is slightly different. You really do need the experience and the team to get it done properly. Will probably go for it. Just need to find the money. My tax bill this year has shown me I've been spending money I don't have, getting the kitchen renovation done. Thanks again 👌👊
