Walter Scott Prizes

The Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction is an annual book prize awarded to the best historical novel published in the UK, Ireland or the Commonwealth. Sponsored by the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, the prize is worth £25,000 and is awarded annually at the Borders Book Festival in Melrose, Scotland. Previous winners have included Hilary Mantel, Robert Harris, Andrea Levy and Sebastian Barry.

The Young Walter Scott Prize is the UK’s only creative writing prize for young people writing historical fiction. Writers aged between 11 and 19 can submit their stories, which must be set at any time in history as long as it is before they were born, to win a travel grant of up to £500 and their work published in an anthology. Founded to encourage young writers to become the storytellers of the future, the YWSP also runs a series of Imagining History workshops in which professional writers, storytellers and experts in creative exploration.
