ATTENTION Tile setters…there’s a serious debate going down on my buddy Kipps YouTube channel. If you have used Schluter products and are familiar with them, you know the quality and the user friendlyness of them. I use Schluter pretty much exclusively. They have never given me a reason to swap to another system.
Schluter has come out with a “Peel & Stick” Ditra membrane (which I have not used) but the debate is on if this “easier way to install” the Ditra is a viable method in the tile industry. Debate is between two guys that are tile installers on the daily. So, if you’ve been thinking about using it…you may want to watch this.

SMOOTH ass bird boxes!
Since I posted my latest reel, I found out bird boxes are called many different things depending on the region you live in. Funny how that is. Here in Tennessee they are usually referred to as “bird boxes”.
The way I made these boxes is definitely not standard. I chose the @lpbuildingsolutions smartside pre-finished fascia since I needed to “plow” or dado a groove to accept my Chamclad soffit that I will be using. This simply gives me a clean transition between the two different types of materials without an additional pc of trim. I used a 5/8” straight cut bit to make the dado.
It is really hard to line up the same thickness material and make it look worth a damn. So, I opted to plane my 1x12 down about 1/4”. This gave me a shadow line that really sets it off! Ties into the 1x2 that I ran up each gable
I temporarily screwed a 1x12 pc of stock under the fascia. This way I can mark a level and plumb line. Then I scribed the outline of the framing for reference. My soffit is right at 3/8” thick. I cut my dado a little wider to give myself some wiggle room if needed. It’s approximately 3/8” deep. I used the track saw to give myself a super clean edge to router to & then made the laser straight cuts.
I did sand down the smartside as best as possible to give it a smooth finish. Any surface that you cut on, you are supposed to paint and seal up those edges so I used three coats of SW Emerald urethane. Since it’s all blacked out you can’t see the wood grains unless you get out a 9000 lumen spotlight and a ladder and put your nose up to it 😆 A little OSI in between the butt joint to keep moisture out and a few galvalized hand drive 5 penny nails. Touch up the nail heads and we are good to go! A smooth ass bird box!

**LIQUID Flash**
If y’all have been following along with me on my socials, you know I am a fan of the @huberwood zip liquid flashing. You can create an air and waterproof seal in the most difficult situations. Since it is in a liquid (caulking) type format you can easily apply it on or into any of the smallest nooks and crannies & it’s Super easy to do.
I have a couple of pics that the liquid flash is ideal to use on vs the standard zip or stretch tapes.
1 - bottom seal of door rough openings. The Liquid flash bonds great to concrete if you are building on a slab too
2 - window sills. I pitch all of my window sills during the framing process. Once the liquid flash is applied you have a waterproof sill that will never rot out if you happen to have a window failure. You can see it doing its job with the water beading up in the surface.
3 - window/door rough openings
4 - I’m trying to build a passive style home and this hip rafter tail would be nearly impossible to tape for an air seal. But it’s no challenge with the liquid flash. It might get a little messy, but cleanup isn’t a problem. I also fill all of my nail holes on the zip wall with a sealant as well.
5 - I like using the sausage tubes vs cartridges. I can get different applicator tips for the gun and less bulky trash after the flashing is applied.
I get a lot of comments saying the tape is way faster for the window sills. I disagree. If you are taping the window correctly, it takes nearly the same amount of time to liquid flash vs tape. IMO the liquid flash is more durable and just takes more abuse than the tape. We get into setting large windows or doors and if you bump the tape wrong it will bunch up and tear. The liquid flash does take time to dry. I always plan ahead though and have the flashing done prior to windows/doors arriving on the site.

TBT…
Acid stained concrete is a really beautiful & super durable flooring option. My choice of stain/finish brand is @KemikoUSA I’ve always used their products and have had fabulous results, everytime.
Stained concrete is one of, if not the most, economical floor you can have in your home. It does take a little planning tho. You need to know during the pouring of the concrete if you want it stained or not. Stained concrete needs a really super slick “burned in” slab to have the best stain variations.
I always use the buff on stone tone wax too. It is way more durable and takes alot more abuse than a clear sealer or epoxy (which are highly scratchable) wax is the best option for no maintenance and wear. If it does get a little worn, just add a little wax and re-buff. But, You will never have enough traffic in your house to warrant a re-buff! 🤙🏻
