Circa 1948, Films Division was established under the ministry of information and broadcasting, Government of India, a year after independence. A cinema-specific venture, Films division (FD) is entrusted with the responsibility of promotion, production and distribution of documentaries, short films and news magazines for internal and external publicity within the relevant public circles.
During the last 65 years, FD has to its credit, over 6440 films and approximately 2478 news reels as well as news magazines and has since become one of the largest Governmental production houses in the world.
Housing a rich and multilingual archive, FD's cinematic treasure trove encompasses early footage of the freedom struggle from the pre independence era to contemporary film records curating the modern century.
FD has pioneered and shaped the burgeoning genres of short, documentary and animation films in Indian cinema, in order to engage and educate the Indian mindscape since its inception.
