Born and raised in Totnes, Phoenix inherited her love of music from her professional violinist mother and multi-instrumentalist father, picking up violin aged five, and studying piano at school shortly after that. By her early teens she was devouring the work of Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway and D’Angelo, and at 15 she began writing her own material as a way of processing painful emotions and experiences.
“I’ve got a lot of work to do as an artist, and 2021 is all about that,” she explains, visibly excited at the prospect of putting in a shift. And as for her long term plans? “I want to make people feel something, you know? I want someone to message me and be like, ‘This song has changed my life’.”
